Anyone try Daiya vegan cheese yet?! Any other good vegan cheeses??

It melts and stretches. I had it in a grilled cheese sandwich and it was the most amazing thing!! It melted, got gooey and stretchy and tasted just like cheese. Weirdest thing, it's made with Cassava!? So it's soy free too. I swear, I don't work for them but this is the closest thing I've had to real cheese EVER: http://daiyafoods.com/

I also like teese, follow your heart and cheezly. Pros and cons to all of them but I can't believe how far vegan cheese has come in a few short years. Any others I should know about??? I'm always on the look out for new vegan cheeses!

I'm hoping to try it because VegNews has made it their "product of the year", but I'm not going to spend money to have it shipped from the outside.  I just have to wait until my HFS sells it.

I think fake cheese suck for the most part and I think we do need to quit searching for something that's not there, because cheese is cheese and you can't fake it.  That said I do like the vegan rice cheese slices on my burgers, and Follow Your Heart on pizza and ziti...lightly.  I try not to think of it as cheese or fake cheese, but just a flavor enhancor, because when I think of it as cheese I'm really disappointed because I really love cheese.  If thank makes any sense.  LOL

I know this is an old post, but I'm so excited! I FINALLY ordered up some daiya yesterday...I'd been putting it off, thinking of it as too expensive to ship, but I ordered four bags, which with shipping was $28. And that's only $7 per bag, which is what soychz runs around here anyway!

Anyway, who am I trying to justify this to? My mother? She'll never find out & she already thinks I'm nuts to spend so much money on food anyway!
:D

After almost 19 yrs as a vegan I want some good cheeze, and who cares about the price!!

good luck with it for me the white daiya seems to spoil fast so be careful... makes awesome quesadillas btw!

thanks! :)
I'm glad I read thru this thread--you're the 2nd person to say it spoils fast & someone suggested freezing it. Has anyone tried that? I'm going to put 3 bags in the freezer once it arrives just in case....

Yes, I keep mine in the freezer.  It works just fine.

It spoils VERY fast - even before being opened.  Two (out of three) of my packages got moldy before I ever even got to use them.  :(

Wow, what a bummer!
Thanks for the info, I'll keep em frozen for sure. :)

I kept mine in the fridge for about a week, and then froze it. It was fine.

Whoever said it's good in a quesadilla--YES! I've only tried the yellow so far (all the others went right into the freezer out of fear) but it's really good in a dilla. I had one tonight with a whole roasted green chili & some sliced red onion. It was like I was transported back 25 years to the days when I ate cheap nachos at the skating rink! (But in a good way--very yummy!)

I'm apprehensive about trying the white though--does ANYONE like it as much as the yellow?

the white is super awesome as well... i loved them on quesadillas and grilled cheese sandwiches

I like the white better on pizza. The yellow to me has a better flavor, but that's probably because it's more like cheddar.

I think they're both great.

Both flavors are good, but best of all is using both together... on pizza, mac n cheese, quesadillas, enchiladas... the possibilities are endless.  I prefer the italian flavor over the cheddar, but when used together they are beyond awesome.  This cheese is what made my vegetarian-on-the-brink-of-going-vegan fiance finally make the leap.  And he LOVED dairy cheese.  So yay Daiya!  Both the Whole Foods stores near me sell the shreds in plastic containers by weight, and we've never had any of it go bad on us... though I think the longest one container has lasted was about a week and a half.  But yeah, we  :)>>> Daiya.

I tried the white kind today & it was really good too! I keep using it in a quesadilla with green chilis & sliced onion. SO good! The best cheese I've had since going vegan! :)

I only ordered two bags of the white, but still want to try the yellow.  The white was great, I made about 3-4 pizzas while I had mine, and sprinkled the white with olive oil before baking, it was very yummy!  I also froze mine from fear immediately and it was fine.

Jessicita, you're in MN?  Does anywhere carry Daiya yet, I've checked a few co-ops and  whole foods in St. paul and noone seems to have it!  I wish they did, the ordering method was too pricey and I suffered tons of eco-guilt from the huge packaging it came in! (Plus I held my breath that it wouldn't be moldly upon arrival!)

I haven't found anywhere yet, either!  I'll let you know if I do.  I'd like to try it again, but I agree that ordering was pricey & not the most eco-friendly choice!

Thanks! I will be on the lookout as well!

I just ordered 10 pounds of the stuff! (5# yellow and 5# white) - needless to say, I love it! Freezer cheese happiness forever (sung to "Strawberry Fields")...
