Anyone try Daiya vegan cheese yet?! Any other good vegan cheeses??

It melts and stretches. I had it in a grilled cheese sandwich and it was the most amazing thing!! It melted, got gooey and stretchy and tasted just like cheese. Weirdest thing, it's made with Cassava!? So it's soy free too. I swear, I don't work for them but this is the closest thing I've had to real cheese EVER: http://daiyafoods.com/

I also like teese, follow your heart and cheezly. Pros and cons to all of them but I can't believe how far vegan cheese has come in a few short years. Any others I should know about??? I'm always on the look out for new vegan cheeses!

Never heard of it, but I went to the website.....it appears that it isn't available yet, right?
Do you know when it will be?  I'd love to try it!

Another thing Jessacita was talking about!  :)>>>
I am very interested in it.
We used to be able to buy Tofutti slices at our store, but no longer...
I loved those. I bought Galaxy slices last time, and they are all right..don't melt well. I don't like Vegan Gourmet.
More reviews in the dairy alternative thread. ...Don't hit me, people.

From what I can tell, it looks like they have cheddar, and Italian. Maybe some others? I really want it.

Okay so it's only availabe in Canada right now (where it's made!) and at some pizza places in Los Angeles BUT you can buy it online at Pangea Vegan Store...check it out: http://www.veganstore.com/daiya-vegan-cheese-shreds/Page_1/209.html

I've had the mozzarella and cheddar! Both reallllllly good but the cheddar is the best. Making grilled cheeses in my george foreman grill is my new raison d'etre!

Okay and it's expensive with the shipping but I didn't get the super fast shipping, I just got it with a freezer pack and crossed my fingers. It arrived via UPS ground 5 days later and was totally fine. I've been eating it at pretty much ever meal.

If you try it, please let me know!!

i'm so tempted to order it online. so expensive, though.
actually, it's less the expense and more that i can't justify shipping myself cheeze.

I like Sheese.  Smoked Cheddar Sheese is awesome.  It will melt if you get it thin enough but the flavor is what sells me.  So yummy.

I will have to try this Daiya, Im always on the look out for more interesting vegan cheese.

I tried the Cheddar flavor, and was kinda underwhelmed, to be honest... THOUGH, I will say that I only used a handful over a potato bake dish, so I'm very much looking forward to using it in a quesadilla, bean burrito, etc. I also bought the Italian, which is sitting in my fridge waiting to be put on pizza! I do love that it's soy-free, low fat, and has a little protein.

It is kinda expensive (especially since Pangea charges an additional $5 or so, on top of shipping, for a Freezy Pack thing to keep it cold during shipping) - but I ordered a few other goodies to make it worth it. I got 3 bags of Daiya, plus some lip balms & Dandies marshmallows.

Now Dandies - those I can rave about! Incredible.

I will report back after giving Daiya a fair shot! I think part of my problem is that I just don't miss cheese... I enjoy a sprinkling of Veganrella from time to time on lasagna or pizza, but most of the time, I never miss the cheese! (I wish I could have told that to my pregan self so I would have gone vegan sooner, but whatever! 8))

ETA: If any of you do order Daiya from Pangea, they will email you asking if you want to do 2-Day shipping because they won't guarantee that the Daiya will remain fresh if they ship Standard... Standard shipping was like $6ish, and 2-Day was $17 (!!!), so I said to just ship it Standard, especially since it had the freezy pack in there. The package arrived in 3 days (which is what they told me Standard would take), and the Daiya was just fine. It was pretty much room temperature (not cold anymore), but certainly not rotten or even warm. I'd say skip the 2-Day shipping if you don't want to pay loads for it. I don't think it's necessary.

It looks not slimy!! The one thing I hate about vegan cheese is the slimy-ness and all the "juice" that gets everywhere. Are the pictures a lie, or is it a non slimy cheese?

Jessacita- definitely try it in a grilled cheese or quesadilla! I think that is where the daiya really shines because it gets all melty and gooey and stretchy and man, i'm about to make one now!

Ponycakes - no, not slimy at all, totally different consistency than the FYH and teese type of vegan cheese! I think you will like!

Totally agree with Jessacita about the getting regular shipping too...I did it all the way here in SF and had no problems! the freezy back was still cold! I'd be a little careful in the summer when it's really hot but other than that, I think you're fine!

i got dr. cow cashew cheese from veganessentials, regular shipping, no freezy pack, to L.A. and... it was fine. mwahahaha

but i think next time i get vegan cheez online i'll just order a bunch and get a freezy thing anyway.

faunablues - i am with you on that. just get every kind you want and keep them forever...this is the best plan! then you never have to worry about which kind to work a recipe around, you have them all! that is what i call, living the dream :)

MDvegan and I went and got some of the Daiya cheese (Italian style) yesterday and my husband just made me some pizza with it tonight.  Wow!  It is amazing.  It's a little more like American cheese than mozzarella but, still, it was a fabulous pizza experience. I ate the whole thing.  My omni husband was duly impressed and even said that he would eat it instead of real cheese next time!

I made broccoli beer cheese soup tonight using Daiya, and it was freakin' GOOD. I was a little nervous about the flavor since most vegan cheeses are only good when baked - but Daiya was amazing & added to the flavor, thickness, and creaminess.

I'm really liking this stuff. Pizza still hasn't been made yet, but it will be soon...

JessaCita- you've sold me. I used to make an outstanding cheesy beer and broccoli soup. I'd love to order this cheese and try it out. MMMM.

My Daiya went moldy before I ever had a chance to make pizza - all 3 packages (2 unopened)!  :'(  I'm sure I'll try it again someday, but since I paid so much for shipping & the cheese itself ain't cheap, it'll be awhile.

That's really sad!! I'm sorry that happened to you. :(

I requested Daiya at our GFS, and asked them to bring back the Tofutti slices.
