Cheap Tofu

Some people may not know this or may not have an Asian/Oriental food market in their area but these places usually have good tofu for cheap. You may have to ask for it and it is usually not packaged just placed in a plastic bag with some water. I get 3 standard size blocks for 1 dollar at my store. Definitely check it out or let me know what you get at your oriental ;)b market
I would like to by the cheap tofu,however the fact in might have GMO soybeans concerns me. Anyone else look for non GMO tofu, when they buy tofu??
I only get organic,non GMO soy but even still, at the grocery it is less than 2$ a block. Maybe we're lucky, I don't know.

I'm always tempted to be like "I will pay you three times as much if you will let me have that one fish alive, and then don't buy another to restock." Which I know wouldn't help much, but Lingcod are just so cute and grumpy and sad!
surprisingly, most of the tofu i've found at asian markets has "no gmo" or "non-gmo" somewhere on it. Not organic though.
Oh yeah, and something actually relevant: tofu around here is ridiculous. I can only get one kind (Cauldron extra-firm plain tofu), and it's upwards of £2.50 a block. It's just not worth it.
I've tried one "Oriental" market in San Antonio looking for bulk tofu and it didn't have it. I know there are other ones in SA but my husband does the driving and he doesn't want to drive all over the big city for nothing. If anyone who resides in San Antonio knows of a store to get non-GMO tofu in bulk (and fairly cheap), please let me know, either here or as a private message. Thanks.

The Asian supermarket in Los Angeles' Little Tokyo sells the packaged tofu, the same kind I see at Trader Joe's or Vons, for 89 cents. I also bought Fuji apples that came out to 21 cents each.
the best place to get cheap tofu is to make it at home :P

jeez really?? Is that because you're in some remote village that it's so expensive? Yeah I know we have it more expensive in the UK, but I never pay more that £1.75 for a block of Cauldron. Do you have a Waitrose near you - they have other cheaper brands too. So do the Holland and Barrett shops near me. M'eh, maybe I'm lucky living in London and having more choice.

Back to the original topic:
I gave up buying tofu from the Oriental shops because whenever I bought it, it said it was firm and it wasn't really it was kind of a more firm than normal silken tofu (if that makes sense).
I did ask the staff about this but they didn't get what I meant; their English isn't great.
However, if I want silken, which is not often, I will buy it then as it's much chceaper than the Supermarkets/HFS.
I miss the locally made tofu from my co-op back home.
Here I've been buying the tofu at the Asian stores because yeah, it's at least half the cost of the tofu at the biomarkt. I should consider the organic/gmo factor though. Anyway, they have a couple different varieties of tofu, and I've had the same experience as you, Shell, with the tofu being too soft. But then I bought a different kind and it was super smooth and super firm but it smelled gross. Once I marinated it it was great.
I went to the city today, and while I was there I went to the asia market. They had blocks of tofu twice the size of normal ones for 1.75. They weren't certified organic or anything, but they said nongmo
I don't even know where there is an Asian market within an hour of here...I might have to find one! When I visited my mom's friend in California, we went to an Asian market, and I fell in love! We bought so much stuff that we had to bring back an extra suitcase on the plane (back before they charged extra!). I found a bag of sesame seeds for a dollar--and it was a huge bag! Tofu that cheap sounds amazing! :)>>>
