Christmas List

Hey!  I know it's early, but what vegan related items (kitchen equipment, books, clothes...) are on your Christmas lists?

Everyone always asks me what I want and I can never think of anything!  Let's brainstorm!

I'm asking for a mortar and pestle so that I can grind spices (and mint for mojitos!).

New garlic press (or two, I get thru a lot of garlic)
The Chinese kitchen knife I keep dreaming about
A mandoline (slicer, not musical instrument!)  ;)
A Dutch oven
An iron griddle to make Welsh cakes on

An under-the-cupboard knife storage tray to free up some counter space.

Also, an under-the-cupboard spice storage tray to free up some cupboard space and to have easier access.

A food processor would be nice too, but that's probably asking too much!

Hey Heater - do you have any pics of the spice rack of which you speak? I hate my current spice situation and want something to accomodate the copious amounts of flavors, sizes, my need to alphabetize, can be stored away from the stove....none of which I have now. So I'd be interested to see what you're thinking of!

This is more of a year-round wish list than a Christmas list, just ideas for any reason/occasion  :)

Vitamix
Tea kettle
4 quart crock pot
pizza stone
dutch oven
frying pan with cover
Tea pot

Ummmm....that's all I can remember for now....

Also, an under-the-cupboard spice storage tray to free up some cupboard space and to have easier access.

I too need to move my spices away from the stove. I was thinking about something that would hang on the back of my pantry door....

Here are some pics of knife and spice racks that are currently for sale on ebay. These particular ones are manufactured in some guys woodshop in Minnesota:

I'm just about to break down and buy the wood racks off of ebay because I cannot find the in any retail stores near me!

EDIT: Sorry about the extra photos at the bottom  Not for sure how that happened :-\

Heater - these are brilliant. If you find out he has a website, can you post it here?!

I'm not sure if he has a website but his ebay name is theallaroundman1 and here is a link to one of his auctions (is this okay to post??)

Tell him I sent ya and maybe he'll give me a discount!! hehe.

The great thing about these is that you can stain or paint them to match your cabinets.

I was actually just thinking about this today, but mine is more of a birthday list because it's in just under a month! :)

I would like:

-Soy candles (preferably in yummy "autumn" scents like vanilla, pumpkin spice, cranberry...)
-Flannel sheets
-An immersion blender!
-Apron (thanks, laurabs! ;))
-Ginger Souffle body scrub from Origins
-Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliner (only some colors are vegan)
-Neti pot (an awesome little thing for sinus health/allergy relief :D): http://www.amazon.com/Neti-Nasal-Cleansing-seen-Oprah/dp/B00016X0N2/ref=pd_bbs_sr_6/102-2529503-5215367?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1189892621&sr=8-6

And I think that's it for now... I always feel bad asking for gifts, especially since I'm living rent-free with my parents right now! Hopefully I can just get one or two little things & then I'll make a nice dinner for my parents to thank them for letting me free-load while I figure out my post-college life! ;)

Wow, where do you find under the counter knife storage trays.  I would love one.  I just took my knives out of the thing that sits on the counter last night because it takes up too much room.  My BF is a home renovator and he did my kitchen so I will ask him if he can make something to match my cabinets.  What a brilliant idea!

Well, I made an extensive Christmas list because everyone wants lots of ideas.

As I am renovating and trying to get rid of stuff, not add stuff I made mine simple for people (my family)

Breadmaker
Costco gift card
Crappy Tire gift card
Loblaws gift card (grocery store)
Dominion gift card (grocery store)
LCBO gift card (liquor store)
Amazon.ca gift card
Criminal Minds DVD - season two.  I have season one.

I love gift cards because then I can get what I truly need.  Two years ago I got a Costco gift card and bought a toaster oven and an iron with it.

Grocery store gift cards come in amazingly handy.  After all, we all eat!

My dad and his partner want for nothing so my sister and I often get them tickets for a show at a local theatre.  Then I donate to charities close to my heart in their name.  Mainly animal related charities and an orphanage in Mexico.  As well, the Santa fund with the Toronto Star.  It provides toys and gifts to the needy children in my area.  I always give to the Cozumel Humane Society on their behalf as my dear sweet Isabela came from there.  This year I will also add Greek Animal Rescue because my beautiful bald Cali came from there.

I liked the idea someone posted on the reusable grocery bag thread about giving them as well so I think before my grocery store runs out, buying some of the bags (only 99 cents) and give them as well.

I also like to give environmentally friendly dish detergent to people.

Hmmm, I think I will make my dad and his partner (never know what I should call her) an environmentally friendly basket.  Some reusable bags, dish detergent etc.

Yabbit, I see that you also want a dutch oven for Christmas. I've never owned one and was wondering (after a quick Google search) if I should be looking for dutch ovens made out of a certain material (is cast iron best? or ceramic?). Can you (or anyone else) let me now what I should be considering (price, material, size, etc.)?

Thanks!!

For people who mentioned mandolin slicers, what brand/type do you like?  Do you know anything about how to clean it?

I just had an inspiration - a logo'd apron that says something like: "baking goddess," "vegans taste better," or something... :)

OMG! Apron is totally on the list in my head! :) I always use my mom's & I have been wanting my own forever! (And a personalized one is a great idea!) :) I am going back to add it to my list, since I'll probably print that off when I forget what I want to ask for... Like I always do. ::)

Another idea for those of you who want better places than the counter to store your knives:

I heart mine and the comments I get occasionally about it.

I want a whole set of cast iron cookware. From skillets to muffin pans (if they make those, lol).

Some vegan baking books would be good too.

I thought briefly about getting one of those BUT I need to keep my knives out of site/out of mind for my little one. She loves to help me cook in the kitchen and I think a magnetic strip full of pretty, shiny knives would just be too tempting for her to grab one if I turned my head for a split second!  :-\
