Effective Vegan Deodorant

I have been cursed with very sweaty armpits all of my life. Shortly after going vegan my sweat began to stink worse, it's gross and kind of peppery, though I don't eat much pepper. I'm trying to stick with "natural" deodorants since antiperspirants contain aluminum which is linked to Alzheimer's (runs in my family). I eat a fair amount of onions and garlic, I don't know if that can affect body odor.

I've tried Tom's, Jason (regular and tea tree oil), liquid rock, baking soda, and lavender body powder. None have worked. I'm really at my wits end here. I don't want to use typical clinical strength deodorant, but I might have to if I can't find anything that works.

Does anyone else have this issue? I would really appreciate any product recommendations or tips.

I was doing the baking soda/cornstarch thing for a while, but it seemed to stop working, so I started using my Nature's Gate again....

I had that happen. You might just need to try a new ratio, or stop mixing with water if you are doing that.

I was mixing with water at first, but I found that it stung more that way - so then I started using a make-up brush and just brushing the dry mixture on right after I got out of the shower....it worked really well for a couple of weeks, but then I started getting stinky again (mainly in my right pit which I find odd)
so I'm just taking a break with the Nature's Gate but will go back to the powder again soon for another go around.

If I get stinky, it's usually just my right pit, too!!!!

My left pit is the stinky one. I thought I was the only unevenly stinky person.

Tom's has a new liquid crystal roll-on.  It's working pretty great thus far.  They have unscented (which smelled gross, actually) and citrus.  So now my pits smell like mandarins, instead of b.o.  And it was only $3.00.  Woot.

The reason that you still sweat while using natural deoderants is because it is aluminum-free. Your body is supposed to sweat to get rid of toxins so clogging up your sweat glands isn't the greatest thing to do. The deoderants are mainly used to keep the funky smell at bay so you will still sweat but won't smell. I use Aromaco by LUSH and I like it.

With almost any natural deo, you're going to have to reapply later on in the day (not until way later usually).

At first I used baking soda mixed with a bit of lotion (well put lotion on your pits first then the baking soda) that worked great for the smell. Then I switched to the crystal...which was fabulous in the winter....but it didnt stand up so well to the heat of summer. It think I'll try combining baking soda and cyrstal and see how that pans out. I also heard that using orange peels is an excellent way to fight out bo (plus you will smell like oranges). I havnt tried this yet beause we never have oranges in the house :(

what do you guys do about the baking soda staining your pitters? mine are getting all red and kinda bumpy even though ive been using baking soda as deodorant for a while now. it works amazing, but i don't like my pits being red :[ does the corstarch help?

baking soda can be a little bit caustic. i'm not sure if cornstarch would really change that.

the liquid salt stuff works for me, even with summer + running. But I'm not much of an armpit sweat-er to begin with.

I never got red/bumpy with just BS, but I did get stained pits. Cornstarch helps with that (no darkening), and I like the overall mix better with CS.

I have a question, I would be willing to try baking soda, but I wear tank tops all the time during summer. Does the baking soda dry white on your underarms?

It does for me, but I'm not very careful with it. I just kinda smear it on. I don't mind, though. I'm glad the cornstarch helps with the dark staining, because that was pretty odd.

i just got a new one that i really like so far and it seems to be working.  i found it in the mens grooming section of whole foods, it's called Organic Grooming by Herban Cowboy - Wild Maximum Protection.  it smells kinda like bubble gum - not like how most mens deodorants smell.. and the back says 100% vegan.  it was kinda expensive (8.99) but i figured if it works it's worth it, plus they last a long time.
