Effective Vegan Deodorant

I have been cursed with very sweaty armpits all of my life. Shortly after going vegan my sweat began to stink worse, it's gross and kind of peppery, though I don't eat much pepper. I'm trying to stick with "natural" deodorants since antiperspirants contain aluminum which is linked to Alzheimer's (runs in my family). I eat a fair amount of onions and garlic, I don't know if that can affect body odor.

I've tried Tom's, Jason (regular and tea tree oil), liquid rock, baking soda, and lavender body powder. None have worked. I'm really at my wits end here. I don't want to use typical clinical strength deodorant, but I might have to if I can't find anything that works.

Does anyone else have this issue? I would really appreciate any product recommendations or tips.

I just use baking soda under my arms. It doesn't prevent sweat, but it really stops odor. Seriously works awesome!

I am also interested in trying this because it freshens your whole body supposedly...idk...I like the concept. It has excellent reviews and is cheaper than Body Mint.

eta...apparently the one I linked to is a gelcap, but they have it in non gelatin pills, too.

I'm on the same boat. I used the crystal and baking soda together for a bit. But baking soda bothers me a tad.
Nothing else has worked.

Right now I'm using the crystal and putting it on a ton along with body spray and staying away from people. Haha.

Have you tried the baking soda + cornstarch? Baking soda worked for me for a couple years, but it doesn't seem to work now, unless there's a good amount of cornstarch. They have to be mixed up, though. I would try it without making a paste, too. (I don't know what you've tried) Just get your pits a little damp (barely, or not at all), then pat on a good amount of the mix.

not that this is gonna help sara, but I've been doing the baking soda/water mixture for about a week now, and it still hurts my right pit for about 15 minutes....I tried not shaving this morning (which was really hard for me) and it helped, but I can't do that everyday obviously....will the cornstarch help that?  sorry for jacking your thread, sara!

Maybe? You will probably notice some dark staining after a while with just baking soda, anyway. I would add in the starch. Hmm. I don't shave that much, but even when I do, I've never had any..pain. You're not just like shaving dry, are you?

no, shaving with soap and water, in the shower.
I think I'm gonna try just dry baking soda tomorrow...
what's the baking soda/cornstarch ratio I should use?

A few sprinkles of baking soda + a few sprinkles less of cornstarch. Maybe like a 2:1?

I have the same problem.  I'm glad I only wasted $3.00 on Trader Joe's knockoff brand, although if I wanted to smell like BO, I could've saved my $3.  I've tried baking soda, baby powder, cornstarch, tea tree oil and various combinations of the above and am about ready to throw in the the sweat-soaked towel and go back to regular deodorant.

eating onions and mostly garlic will most definitely affect your body "odor". I like Weleda citrus deodorant and Lush coconut powder deodorant. I will not use the chemical stuff either... I'd rather smell!!!! ;)

Thanks guys! I have tried baking soda, but it doesn't seem to work that well and makes my armpits all stingy. I bought some Nature's Gate spring fresh to try, so I will have to see how that goes. I think my plan should be to religiously apply my deodorant before bed and when I wake up, and avoid onions and garlic (though I do love them dearly). Now that I think about it I remember my mom won't eat onions and garlic because they make her stinky.

I can only find a few kinds of natural deodorant where I live now, but I will be relocating in less than a week so I may have more options available soon.

I spent the money and got the Aromoco bar from Lush. It works for me. But definitely sniff before you buy, because you'll be smelling the stuff a little bit.

I use the Crystal and I love it.  I know it gets pretty mixed reviews, but I have been using it for over a month and have had no problems.  Yeah, I get a little sweatier than I like sometimes, but not usually smelly.  And if I do get smelly in the middle of the day, it's not like it's that much of a hassle to just put some more on.  Of course, I'll have to see how it does this summer under some more rigorous heat, because right now I can hide quite a bit of stink under a sweatshirt if needed.  :P  And the best part is that I feel like it'll last way longer than my previous traditional antiperspirant/deoderants.

I like the crystal sticks. NOT the spray version though, they bite! But the crystal stick (or are they "stones??") work great. :)

My problem.
Central Florida is not the best place for a sweaty person.

I just realzed this will be my first non "normal" deodorant summer. Eek.

everyone always complains about vegan deodorant like JASON, which is what I use and I've never had a problem with it?  maybe, I don't perspire a lot?

Lol. Halfway through reading your post I was like I TOLD YOU TO GET THIS ONE. Haha.

I still like the kiss my face liquid rock. Its 103 degrees and its holding up pretty decent. I just wish I didn't get the patchouli scent. Its kind of gross. Haha.

Again, I have to advocate for Lush Aromoco. If you have a Macy's, you should be able to get it.

1 tablespoon baking soda to 4 tablespoons corn starch is the best ratio I have found.

i've used kiss my face liquid rock and the liquid version of the crystal one, and they both seem to work well. i just get whatever happens to be cheapest.
