You are here

environmentally and socially responsible, vegan shoes?

Hi!

Do any of you have any resources for vegan shoes made in the USA/Canada/close to the USA?  Is that even possible to find?

This year, I've been trying to only buy things that have not traveled far, and are made under acceptable worker conditions.  Before just vegan did it for me, but not anymore.  The best I can find are shoes from 'vegetarian shoes' that are made in Portugal/Spain.

I'm looking for shoes that I can bike with but also are dressy enough for office wear.  The only shoes that are currently have that are dressy enough for office wear are also high heels which I cannot wear while biking :(.  I need to bike to work, I really don't want to take the bus when I could just as easily bike there, it's only 4 miles away.

Any thoughts?

I think you're going to have to buy two seperate pairs of shoes - one for business/dress-up and one for casual/travel to work. I love my Macbeth shoes. I suggest you look at MooShoes webpage.

Thanks, I did end up with some shoes from mooshoes.  I already have macbeth shoes and a simple shoes pair, both made in China.... Are your macbeth shoes made somewhere else?

You might have some luck at Pangea.  They should all be ethically made, some in the USA, but they are not necessarily environmentally responsible.

Ahisma claims to be "vegan, eco-friendly and sweatshop-free."  I was debating buying a pair of Simple shoes there.  They seem quite eco-friendly, but they are made in China and I'm not sure how impressed I am with Simple's "Ethical Supply Chain Guidelines."

My boyfriend just got a pair of shoes in the mail from his mom for his birthday, and they are "sanuk" brand. They're more casual styled, and they are NOT ALL vegan (2 or 3 models are made with leather), however each shoes is clearly labeled whether it's vegan or not. Many are made with organic hemp or cotton, some with recycled rubber.

Here's the link

Those are pretty cute--and they're not incredibly expensive! Hooray! Vegan shoes for the poor!
