i think i found the best vegan hot dog! finally

I usually don't do fake meats cause they are all gross, but I gave the Worthington Loma Linda Big Franks a try after reading some reviews on them.  It seems even meat eaters like them so I had to try.  They come in a can with a red label.  I tried them for the first time last night and wow they were good.  I honestly was expecting to hate them, but even my hard core meat eating hot dog addicted husband said they were better then most real hot dogs.  They taste kinda like the vienna sausages u buy in the little can, and like something else some very familiar but i can't figure it out.  Just like the vienna sausages u can eat them right out of the can.

Apparently I am behind the times, LOL I keep getting told that they have been around for more then 20yrs.  I am sad I have never heard of them before.  I really want to try these grilled.

Anyone else tried these and like them???

Anyone ever grill them? do they turn out ok?

I will put their site below for anyone who is interested.  you can also go to "where to buy" and u can choose the exact product u want to find and it will tell what stores in your area sell just that product.

I saw some of their products at Ingles the other day.
I was honestly frightened by it...I instantly thought of spam, but maybe I'll give them a shot.

I want the scallops right now! *goes to check ingredients*

eta: boo... :'( the scallops are labeled vegetarian...but some of the other products are labled vegan.  I want to try those hot dogs.  I've never liked the ones I've tried in the past.

there isn't a store within 30 miles of me that carries their products  :'(

but, i also noticed that a LOT of the really good looking vegan ones had been discontinued, so i'm not that sad.  i make do here with my tofu and chickn strips and homemade seitan  :)>>>

i actually have a can of the skallops that i've been a little nervous about eating cus i don't know what i should do with them.. the label does say 'vegetarian' but the ingredients look vegan:

Skallops: TVP

Broth: water, salt, monosodium glutamate, L-lysine monohydrochloride.

everything i saw on google for the L-lysine says non-animal source.

so how should i cook em?!

you can get a great deal on the loma linda brands through amazon. Buy them by the case and have them autoshipped saved tons of money.

plus they are shipped for free because the order is over 25$.

i've never seen this product/comany before.  :'( looks like they have some fun things!

They were the makers of Tuno, before Kelloggs bought the company and stopped making it.  They still make Chic-ketts, which I like.

I'm pretty sure the worthington brand uses GMO (they are a kellogg's company!). The ingredients just aren't very pure.....I did used to eat the Chikettes too though.

Kellogg's acquired them a year or a year and a half ago.  I wouldn't be surprised by GMO ingredients.  The brand was started by SDA, I believe, and they're not so much health food and organics as much as strictly vegetarian.

I was totally thrilled to find vegan brats (by Tofurky and another smaller brand that I have yet to try). They were the one meat product that I was missing at all, esp once grilling season came around. Hooray!

I think I've had these dogs. A long time ago, I remember my ex-boyfriend's mom buying us some veggie stuff, and one of the items was canned veggie dogs. It must be the ones you're talking about, I've never seen other canned dogs since! They were awesome! His mom also bought some Chili Man chili, which is still the best (non-homemade) chili I've ever had, and tasted great with the dogs. I'm so glad I found this thread, now that I have a brand name to look for, I'm gonna try to find them again!

I purchased these about a week ago.  It clearly says VEGAN in big caps in the side of the can.  I am lacto-ovo so I picked them up because I haven't found a suitable substitution for hot dogs yet.  I opened them and noticed that they were packed in a broth like solution.  They DO taste like vienna sausages a little.  Mine tasted heavily of celery.  My toddler usually likes all things veggie, but did not care for these.  He likes the MSF brand the best.  The texture was a little to soft for me.  I dressed them with ketchup and mustard.  I rarely buy hot dogs, but I guess that is a good thing.  I am trying to back away from so many soy analogues.  I have 3 children and caring for them is priority number one.

I bought a package of these.  I wan't too thrilled with them since the taste was kind of bland.  Not what you'd expect for a brat.
