Not Advil

I know Advil isn't vegan.  Are there any natural pain killers/anti-inflammatories out there?  What do I do when I pull a muscle or something?

Just curious...I got a long email from a Yahoo group I'm on about the dangers of overdoing acetominophen (paracetamol) because apparently it's in a lot of cold remedies etc.

Whatever happened to aspirin (acetylsalicilic acid)? Why is it out of favour?

there are loads of alternatives to chemical painkillers, but what you choose to use depends on the problem. hot or cold compresses can help with pain from pulled muscles, so can menthol based rubs and tinctures like olbas oil (which pretty much just make stuff feel hot- which distracts your pain mechanism).

i still use asprin when i need to. paracetamol doesn't cut it for me. i think part of the concern is the risk of reye's syndrom in children, the risk of internal bleeding (stomach and digestive system), blood clotting issues, and interactions with other drugs. also, some people get stomach upsets from asprin, have reactions to non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, and allergies to salicylates, as well.

Chew on pieces of willow bark.  It contains the acutal salicylic (sp?) acid--no need to have laboratory created pill!

Sour cherry juice, tumeric (mentioned above), ginger are all anti-inflammatories that are natural.  That have been used for mild to moderate pain.

Aspirin is back in favor, it went out of favor because it was thought to be the cause of bleeding ulcers, and it can be.  But now docs are giving it daily to patients to thin the blood and prevent blood clots and heart attacks.

Kava kava is a mild painkiller. Don't over do the stuff, though.

I didn't notice the sensation of hotness when I bought and used olbas oil in Ireland.  Maybe I was just distracted by the smell.  ;)

Oh, ok.  I've never seen these.  I have seen empty non-gelatin capsules at my HFS.  I thought this was what you were talking about.

advil as a brand contains stearic acid and gelatine in the ingredients. you might be able to find generic brand ibroprofen with only vegan ingredients though- i have done.

there is also the whole animal testing thing- all medicines on the market have been animal tested. i don't feel that testing already done (every medicine has to have been tested) is undone by not buying medicine today, and feel that the benefits of my remaining alive with medical care enable me to make changes to the system- but thats my personal veiw.

many vegans choose to totally boycott western/animal tested medicine, as well as all things produced by companies with bad ethics reputations, and from companies with a history of animal testing generally, but its up to everybody to make their own desicions and do the best that they feel they can personally do.

either way, its great to have the choice to use something else whenever possible.

I believe I just read that in order to pass FDA regulations, new drugs HAVE to be tested on animals.  So, all drugs have been tested on animals.

I want to add that not all natural remedies are good for you.  I work in neurology and we have had cases of people taking natural remedies (St. John's Wort comes to mind) which caused a myriad of different neurological problems.  Also, we had a case where vitamin B caused nerve damage.  It would be wonderful if vegetable soup cured everything!

yeah i believe this has been government standard for a while.  that's why it's important for individuals and organizations (like PETA) not to place the blame on medical research facilities.

I found something at Whole Foods called Pain-Eze.  It's in a bottle that looks like a normal aspirin bottle, it's food based, and vegan.  There's herbs and minerals including magnesium for muscle relaxation.  It wasn't even much more expensive than normal aspirin.  :)  Thanks for all your help and suggestions guys.  I also bought more turmeric as I had run out.  :)

Oh, I also found electrolyte packets- similar to Emergen-C for those who read my electrolyte thread.  Yay Whole Foods!
