The official nut butter review (to be updated)!

Help me add reviews, and new brands! I know there are many other nut butter brands; I just can't find them.

365 Whole Foods Organics
Cashew butter creamy
OOOH! (cyets)
Natural smooth unsalted peanut butter
it is so creamy and stays that way until you get to the bottom of the jar. Probably our favorite peanut butter. (lebkuchen)
Very good for a "plain" peanut butter.  I bought this to take on vacation and never had any problems with separation (after I left it upside-down overnight.) (icephrosty)
Artisana
Amazon Bliss

Cacao bliss
A mix of raw coconut and cocoa butters, plus raw cocoa nib stuff. I got a packet-sized version of this, and it was pretty grainy yet oily (like powder mixed with oil or something, and as I write that I realize that's what this probably is). It's kind of tart, and I'm not sure if that's the cacao (never had raw before), but generally not something I like too much in chocolate. Oh well. (fb)
Organic Raw Almond Butter
My favorite Almond butter.  It is just plain and uncomplicated. (monkey7)
Organic Raw Black Sesame Tahini

Organic Raw Cashew Butter
This is nice and creamy.  Really good. (monkey7)
Organic Raw Coconut Butter
especially love it! (veganheart)
Very tasty.  This stuff is darn good right out of the jar!  I also like it on top of oatmeal or even slathered on a muffin.  Worth the price for sure. (icephrosty)
That stuff is awesome!  It smells heavenly.  I like to add just a small amount to smoothies.  Yum.  (lbarte)
Organic Raw Macadamia Cashew Butter
Just ok.  I'm not a big Macademia nut fan. (monkey7)
Organic Raw Pecan Butter
This is awesome.  The pecans are sweet and nutty. (monkey7)
Organic Raw Tahini

Organic Raw Walnut Butter

Barney Butter

Better 'n Peanut Butter

Original
the best peanut butter EVER is Better'n Peanut Butter-AMAZING. it's got a smooth, yummy consistency, way lower in fat and calories than typical peanut butter, and is just plain delicious. (sunsista)
I tempered my enthusiasm for this peanut butter, branded 85% less fat and 40% less calories than peanut butter. I was pleasantly surprised! It was creamy, with no oil at the top, and had a sweet taste to it, but not too sweet. Not bad. I wonder how it bakes if I made peanut butter cookies. (saskia)
Earth Balance
Natural almond butter creamy

Natural peanut butter crunchy
Not tasty, and texture ain't great either. Even at room temp, it's difficult to spread; I'm not sure if it's the emlusification (flax), or the peanuts they use, or what. And, it just doesn't taste much like peanut butter. In fact, I went and had some of that cheapo hydrogenated stuff after this, and that tasted more peanutty. Dunno what went wrong here. (fb)
East wind nut butters
Almond butter
I wasn't a big fan of that.  I wasn't a fan of the texture... (tweedle)
Cashew butter
I didn't like this at all, which is surprising because I love cashews.  It just has a really bland taste.  I think it would be ok for savory recipes and/or baking. (icephrosty)
I LOVE this stuff... I mix a bit of cinnamon and agave in it usually...but it's good on its own too. Personally though:  it's easier to just make your own nut butter if you're going for raw nut butter.  soak and blend! Still nommy though. (tweedle)
Organic peanut butter
This didn't have a strong enough peanut taste IMHO.  The color looked pale too...will not buy again. (icephrosty)
Organic tahini
I give this a thumbs up.  I use it all the time for tahini sauce and hummus.  It has a mild taste. (icephrosty)

Grinding machine (in store)
Almond butter
I absolutely love the grind-your-own stuff!  It tastes the best when the almonds are roasted and you eat it within a few days of grinding.  I usually like to add a pinch of salt. (icephrosty)
mine always ends up a little too dry for my tastes, but then a week later all the oil comes out. I stir it back in, and then it's perfect. Weird, huh? (veganrun)
Cashew butter
EW.  I bought some at WF and it was grossssss.  Maybe because the cashews were raw?  I normally like them, so I dunno.  Will never, ever, EVER buy this again. (icephrosty)
Peanut butter
my absolute favorite is just plain ole freshly ground peanuts - nothing added.  It is nice and cheap and not too sweet or salty. (swoop)
this is what I always buy now. Sometimes I do get tired of it, because it's not smooth, and slightly bland, but I like how it's healthier, and peanutty. It's about $3/lb. (AC)
Absolutely amazing.  That's the only description it needs! (icephrosty)
I find this a tiny bit too dry, but I like it for certain things. I don't like to bake with it, but I like it in smoothies. And since it is less messy, this is the kind I like to give to the dog (I roll it into little balls and drop in his food). (veganrun)
Jif
Creamy peanut butter
This is what I always had as a kid. I've always loved it, but I go for the healthier stuff now. I'd probably still eat it if it was around. (AC)
I grew up eating this and because of it refused to eat Skippy or Peter Pan, which I thought tasted too sweet and not creamy enough, but now that I've tried the natural-oil-mix-in kind I don't care for it.  (aggplanta)
Extra crunchy peanut butter

Natural peanut butter
This is good but pretty sweet.  I only bought it once because I prefer my PB to have less of the sweet flavor. (berryraw)
Not too bad.  I like it for cooking/baking because it doesn't separate much.  It's a little salty for my taste, but I'm used to the grind-your-own stuff that has nothing but peanuts. (icephrosty)
This is pretty normal, but seems to have something weird about it. I would choose something else over it, but it's usually the best priced. (AC)
Reduced fat creamy peanut butter

Reduced fat crunchy peanut butter
This tastes kind of  like it is "reduced fat" but I still think it's yummy and quite nutty tasting.  This is the kind of PB we're buying mostly lately and it's good in recipes (Thai, etc) as well as for good old fashioned sandwiches. (berryraw)
Simply creamy peanut butter

Joyva
Tahini
really good. Much better than Woodstock Farms tahini, which I remember being really bitter tasting. (lebkuchen)
Justin's nut butter
Jars-Chocolate almond
Good, but not amazing.  It's a little stiff IMHO.  I like nut butters that are creamy and spread easily.  The taste is good but it needs to be warm to spread... (icephrosty)
Jars-Chocolate hazelnut
OMG is this stuff good.  It's not too sweet and has a perfect hazelnut taste.  I've been eating this straight out of the jar ever since I got it!  This definitely rivals the maple almond as my favorite. (icephrosty)
This has the flavor of nutella but is a bit gritty like most natural nut butters.  I like it, but my daughter LOVES it. It is a reasonably healthy chocolate snack for her, so I plan to make it a pantry staple. ( lbarte)
I liked this one a lot.  It is not overly chocolate and the hazelnuts balance the chocolate well. (monkey7)
Jars-Chocolate peanut
Amazing! Apparently Justin's is made in Boulder, CO! I had no idea. We got it at a "local" Whole Foods there. Best peanut butter I've ever had. Perfect flavor, not too thick. Perfect. Will buy more flavors! P usually cares nothing about peanut butter, but loved this. We ate a ton of the jar in about a day. (AC)
Jars-Classic almond butter
Nice plain almond butter.  No added oils so it is less smooth then regular almond butter. (monkey7)
Jars-Classic peanut butter

Jars-Maple almond butter
This is a little harder to find than the squeeze pack, but it's worth ordering online.  It tastes more fresh from the jar and it's not as hard to get out!  This is one of my all-time favorite nut butters.  It's seriously good! (icephrosty)
delicious! The maple makes it nice and sweet, I love it on green apples. It was a biatch to stir though. (aggplanta)
It does not have a strong maple flavor and could use a little more.  Not too sweet and has a nice flavor. (monkey7)
Squeeze pack-Chocolate almond

Squeeze pack-Chocolate hazelnut
Omg delicious. If I needed to gain weight and had the money, I would eat a tub of this. It's like a much higher quality version of Nutella. Hazelnuts seem to vary in levels of deliciousness, but these are some good ones. It's pretty smooth, and among the spreads, is the most liquid. (fb)
Squeeze pack-Chocolate peanut butter
I thought that this would be pretty much chocolate + peanut butter, but there's a fair amount of cocoa butter in here. There's cocoa butter in all the flavors, but I can taste it the most in this one, to the point that it reminded me of lotion (aside from that association, it's good). I'm used to unsalted nut butters, so all of these varieties taste a little salty to me. But they're only like 3% per packet, so not so much. (fb)
Squeeze pack-Classic almond butter
The almond flavor predominates over the chocolate here. It's good, but compared to the others is my least favorite. (fb)
Squeeze pack-Classic peanut butter
Nice flavor.  The texture is the same as the almond butter.  It does not contain added oil.  I like the squeeze paks because it is easier to transport when traveling.  (monkey7)
Squeeze pack-Maple almond butter
I don't usually buy the little packets but they are great for traveling.  You can get them at Starbucks, so that's a plus.  I find that the almond butter is dry unless you REALLY knead the packet for a long time. (icephrosty)
This is good, but not amazing. I didn't thoroughly knead my packet, but I didn't find it too dry. It didn't have a ton of maple flavor, but still good. (AC)

Almond butter creamy

Almond butter crunchy
This is so good.  There are chuncks of almnds in every bite. (monkey7)
Almond butter with sea salt
Nice flavor but a little runny.  This is just roasted almonds and sea salt.  It firms up a little in the fridge but not as much as the butters with added oils.  I would buy this again. (monkey7)
Natural almond butter no salt creamy

Natural almond butter no salt crunchy

Natural almond butter raw

Natural peanut butter creamy roasted
It definitely needs stirring, which was kind of weird for me, but I mean....it's peanut butter, so it's good. Nice, and creamy. (AC)
I like this the most out of the many PB brands I have tried.  It is nice and creamy.  I think it is worth the $5.00 for the jar. (monkey7)
Natural peanut butter crunchy
This tastes like the creamy but with some chopped peanuts mixed in.  There are not that many peanuts in it though.  If you are looking for a super crunchy PB, this is not the one.  It is good though. (monkey7)
Natural peanut butter no salt creamy

Natural peanut butter no salt crunchy

Natural cashew butter roasted

Natural cashew macadamia butter roasted

Natural macadamia butter roasted
I don't think I'd buy this again.  The taste was so-so, but I couldn't seem to find the right use for it.  It didn't work well for sandwiches because it's so runny, but I did like it in smoothies. (icephrosty)
Natural tahini with salt raw

Natural tahini with salt roasted
I think this is the best brand of tahini I've used as of yet.  It has good flavor and yet doesn't overpower or funk-ify my hummus or homemade cheez recipes.  I don't eat it plain however. (berryraw)
I agree that this is the best tahini! The flavor is good, and it stays smooth in the fridge! I barely even had to stir it, it hadn't hardened after quite a while of not being used/open, and it was very creamy. Maybe a bit more expensive, but will buy this again. (AC)
Organic almond butter no salt creamy

Organic almond butter no salt crunchy

Organic almond butter raw
I like this because it is raw and there is no added salt.  It has a nice flavor too.  (monkey7)
Organic almond butter no salt creamy raw
It's very thick and hard to stir up but it's delicious and simply almond.  I use it to make salad dressings most often. (berryraw)

Natural almond butter

Natural brazil nut butter

Natural cashew butter

Natural crunchy peanut butter

Natural dark tahini

Natural hazelnut butter

Natural light tahini
Has a slightly bitter flavour and rough texture. Really sticks to the roof of your mouth. Regardless, I still find myself eating it... I think it would work well for something savoury, but it'd be iffy in a desserty thing or with fruit/in a sandwich/on toast. (narcissus)
Natural smooth peanut butter

Organic almond butter

Organic cashew butter

Organic crunchy peanut butter

Organic dark tahini

Organic light tahini

Organic pumpkin seed butter
Patently gross. I hope I got a bad batch, because this tasted like a cross between cardboard and old socks, with a layer of musty-smelling sunflower oil that wouldn't stir in. Just... no. (narcissus)
Organic smooth peanut butter

you should add "Krema" to the list for peanut butters.  It's simply peanut butter, no added oils or salts or sugars, and it's SOOO good.  The texture is perfect.

I usually buy the Whole Foods Organic 365 peanut butter. But I saw Better'n Peanut Butter on clearance($1.56 instead of $6.19) at Target and decided to give it a try.

That sounds DISGUSTING, lol, I'm definitely gonna stay away from that one...

AC, will you add "Barney Butter" to the list?  It's almond butter that comes in both a crunchy and smooth variety...made in a peanut free facility!

Justin's chocolate peanut butter jar

Amazing! Apparently Justin's is made in Boulder, CO! I had no idea. We got it at a "local" Whole Foods there. Best peanut butter I've ever had. Perfect flavor, not too thick. Perfect. I feel like I should mention Trader Joe's peanut flour in this thread.  It's not technically a nut butter but you can make it into one by adding liquid and stirring it up!  I've been seeing it all over the blog world lately so I decided to buy some.  It's around $3.50 for a whole pound, and it is very high in protein but not fat or calories.  I used almond milk to reconstitute it and then stirred it into my morning oats...t'was very, very good!

Naturally Nutty

Organic pepita sun seed butter - Tastes like pumpkin pie in a jar, I love it!  The spice is so good in this stuff.

Organic peanut butter - Nothing special.  I won't buy this again because the peanut taste wasn't very strong.

I've added reviews, but I like both of the Smart Balance rich roasts-creamy and crunchy. It's one of (or the) only crunchy pb I've liked.

Sunflower Butter:  I like this because it is differnt.  The texture is a little gritty because it is just sunflower seeds and salt.  There is a slight bitterness to it but I still thought it was good.

Almond Butter with Sea Salt:  Nice flavor but a little runny.  This is just roasted almonds and sea salt.  It firms up a little in the fridge but not as much as the butters with added oils.  I would buy this again.

Justin's Nut butters

Maple Almond Butter:  It does not have a strong maple flavor and could use a little more.  Not too sweet and has a nice flavor.

Trader Joe's-
Creamy unsalted smooth peanut butter

I've been buying this pb for a while now, but I was on the review thread directory and thought I'd put in another word for this kind. It's tasty simple peanuts. Mine doesn't get that hard in the fridge, so my fridge temp might be a bit higher than fb's.

Just wanted to add my favorite brand - they're Canadian though, and I'm not sure if they ship into the US yet...

Nuts To You

They make peanut, almond, cashew, hazelnut, macadamia, sunflower, pumpkin, tahini

There's an organic and a non-organic version of each. I always buy the organic, and they's SO good... There's no added salt, sugar or oil, so it's just the pure flavor of the nut/seed. They dry roast rather than oil roast, so the taste is really clean. They also have some raw butters.

My favorite is the organic roasted sunflower seed butter. I love it on a rice cake with some blueberry jam :) I've been using it in a lot of recipes lately, too - to thicken pureed soups, bean dips, salad dressing, etc...

Their tahini is awesome too, not as bitter as some other tahinis I've tried.

They do need to be stirred, since they don't have salt or oil, but I stir them once and they stay mixed nicely.

So for anyone in Canada, or if you're visiting Canada, keep an eye out!
