Smart Balance CREAM CHEESE!

Have you guys tried this yet?

http://www.smartbalance.com/CreamCheeseFamily.aspx

I usually buy the non-hydrog. Tofutti brand, but wondered if this was any better. I haven't seen stores carry it yet!

that's sort of exciting. :)
but the smart balance margarine isnt vegan, unless you get the smart balance light.
do you know if this is vegan?
it would be nice to have another fake cream cheese around..i dont think the tofutti is really that great...

This doesn't sound promising, vegan-wise: "dairy goodness without the saturated fat and cholesterol of ordinary cream cheese."

Ponycakes, Smart Balance organic margarine is also vegan (even says so on the container), though it's very expensive.

Maybe veggydog is right....not vegan :(

I find that the tofutti stuff is great in recipes, but not that great plain. I usually sprinkle some cayenne pepper or some kind of salty herb like herbamare on it for a sandwich spread, and then its fantastic!!!!  On bagels and toast too!

I emailed them to ask which of their products contain dairy....for some reason I couldn't find nutritional info/ingredients for any of the products anywhere.  And you'd think a product that emphasizes health so much would provide something on its site :(

Odd... the site design is new, it used to be different and have all the nut. info.

I emailed them too, just to ask and let them know other people are interested in vegan cream cheese as well.

All of the smart balance cream cheese has milk as the first ingredient.  If you click on the actual product title, there is a nutritional information link beneath the picture.

Aha! That's new though...I searched high and low for that the other day

I'm pretty miffed that I haven't received any response to my email to the company.

tofutti has a non-hydrogenated version!?!?!?  i stopped eating it because of the partially hydrogenated soybean oil.  is there another one?

Yep, there's a non-hydrogenated version. We get it at our Whole Foods store regularly (sad, but true). I cannot imagine why they continue to make the hydrogenated kind--unless they think it tastes better than the hydrogenated kind. Personally, I like the taste of the non-h version but I've not had the other so I cannot compare them.

Oh, I always get the Tofutti Garlic and Herb Better Than Cream Cheese. I think it is so tasty!

I've had both; I can't tell them apart.  They cost the same.  Must be because the market demands hydrogenation!  ::)

Ok, this might have been what I was thinking of......

FOLLOW YOUR HEART is coming out with a vegan cream cheese and sour cream. Now those will be vegan (they make that cheese everyone loves).
Has anyone seen/tried this stuff????!!!!

Hydrogenation is used because it makes the shelf life longer I think, not so much for taste.

The tofutti garlic and herb flavor is hydrogenated, so what I do is take the non-hydr version, add garlic powder and herbs and then proceed to eat the entire tub.  Yum.

;D I actually don't care much for the taste of plain Tofutti, so I usually do something similar... I spread the cream cheese on a bagel, then sprinkle it with a little rosemary, dried basil, garlic powder, and other random herbs, then add a bit of salt & pepper, and I like it much better this way! :)

I must admit this is my one annoyance in having gone vegan - the lack of healthy substitutes for butter and cream cheese and cheese. Not that butter or cheese is healthy, but the way I see it, at least the organic butter or cheese, is more natural and whole than the margarine or fake cheese.

All the margarines I've seen are made from a composite of various oils, one of which is palm. This is the worst oil out there. I just can't make myself use any of the products as a result.

I've gotten used to it now. But, in the beginning I was actually grumpy because I couldn't make a lot of things, i.e. butter my bread, make pie crusts, etc. Still, the more I go without these things, the less I miss them. So, it works out anyway.

Not to mention the environmental effects of palm oil production.  I've cut way back.
