i've had some luck finding vegan shoes at places that sell cheaper shoes; think payless, sometimes target, khols.  i think that because the items are less expensive, they choose to make them with cheaper plastic/ man- made materials, which works great for me because i don't like to spend lots of money on clothes anyway! i mean it's not environmentally great with petroleum products and all, or the unfair labor i'm sure they are made with, but i guess something's got to give. too bad we can't have it all!

Another note, I just took off my shoe to make sure they were canvas (They are, I got them  rei a while ago not sure if they still carry them) & I noticed my feet stink  because I dont'' wear socks with these shoes & I wear them almost evey day :-[ Ummm I'm going home for lunch, anyone know of any common household quick fixes? I know I dont have any powder. But I do have stuff like baking soda, cornstarch, would either of them work?

This topic has been on my mind lately. My trail runners are vegggy I think (Montrail Hardrocks) But my fav road running sneaker definetly is not. And it took me a loooong time to find a pair that i really like. Either mainstream running sneaker companies need to make more veggy shoes or the veggy companies need to produce better & more varied products. Until then, I will continue to wear laether sneaks I suppose.  :'(

I'm pretty sure that New Balance have several vegan running shoes. Also, I've read on some other veg*n board that the shoes are produced in Western countries so I think they should be okay from that point of view as well. Can't remember where I found that info, though.

Ecstatic- how can you find if a shoe is made in a sweat shop?

Well, it can be tricky. Obviously, no company writes on their website "these shoes are made in sweatshops."

But, when I find a shoe I like, I go to the company website. I check to see what they say about their shoe manufacturing. If my shoe tag says "made in China" or equivalent and there is absolutely nothing on the company website about their manufacturing, I call them. At which point, I ask about the show factory. Usually, when they start giving you evasive answers like "we're not at liability to disclose that information" - it's a sweatshop.

Companies who have nothing to hide will be more than helpful in answering all your questions about the factory, the workers, the materials, etc. Companies who are trying to hide something won't answer your questions.

Also, there are websites out there that list the companies who have sweatshops. Sweatshop Watch is one of them, but I believe they pertain to clothing companies. I'm sure there is a shoe one out there somewhere, though.

I probably seem really obsessive now when it comes to buying things! ;D
