crib mattress?

what kind is a good kind?  I want an organic crib mattress, but i don't want to pay an arm and a leg for it.  Anyone have any goo suggestions for a good mattress?

The one we're looking at getting is organic, but costs around $250 - I haven't found any cheaper unfortunately.  I believe it's made by Naturepedic - a lot of the other ones I've found are made with wool.

i've seen a lot of naturepedic mattresses online.  Amazon.com has them for a little cheaper then other places, but they're still pricey.

Honestly, the babies don't use the crib mattress for all that long. They outgrow it before you know it, and will probably end up sleeping with you half the time. I actually got a used one that was in excellent condition (for free). I am glad I didn't spend any money on it. Maybe if I knew I would be having multiple kids and would use it over and over I would get a really good one? I don't know. Just my 2 cents as a mom on a budget!

We bought a pricey crib mattress and ended up with a devout co-sleeper (which we were CERTAIN that we wouldn't allow.)  How things change when they get here!  ::)

Andy is 100% against the co-sleeping idea - so now I'm curious to see how things will turn out...we'll still get the pricey organic mattress though, just in case...

why against co-sleeping? i'm personally pro co-sleeping so i'm just curious!

I don't know that he has a real, solid reason for being against it, other than he doesn't want a baby in his bed.  I think he mentioned that it's a hard habit to break, which would be my only concern.  But I think nursing while still in bed would be so much nicer than having to get up each and every time.
I'll ask him....

I personally believe that the kids will move to their own beds when they are ready and be able to be more independent then. for me, personally, i didn't ever co-sleep (or at least not that i know of) but i was sleeping in my parents room all of the time when i was still 5+... mine is kind of a "give the baby what they need as a baby so they won't need it as a kid/adult" kind of a philosophy.

I'm actually anti co-sleeping in our house.  Baby in the room; yes.  Baby in my bed; no.

There are ways to more safely co-sleep, but how Evan and I sleep does not foster safely co-sleeping.  We like our sheets, blankets and pillows.  We have a soft pillow-top mattress.  We both shift a lot during sleep.  Bella also sleeps on the bed.  I'd rather have my baby in his own safe space knowing that we won't roll onto him and he won't be smothered by something on the bed.  My cousin is also a pediatrician and while she knows the pros and cons to co-sleeping and not; she has seen her fair share of bad situations that have resulted from co-sleeping.  For me; I'd rather know that I didn't have anything to do with (potentially) harming him (knock on wood that nothing ever does happen).

Every family has to make their own decisions based on the info that is out there.  I am by no means saying that parents that do choose to co-sleep are wrong.  It is just another child rearing choice. :)

Yeah, I get elbowed in the face at least once a week.  Not a safe place for a baby.  Now that I have my horseshoe body pillow, I'm somewhat protected, but the baby would be free game.  When I asked Andy why, he just said 'because - and I'm busy'.  Jerk-ass.

Jerk-ass.

Lol!  There are so many decisions to be made and research to be done.  It is mind boggling at times.  I think we all do what we feel is best for our own situation.

I think it is harder to not co-sleep than co-sleep! nursing in bed rocks-and helps mom keep her sleep and sanity. ours both adjusted fine.....but right now Lyle (almost 3) is yelling for me saying he wants to sleep in my bed. lol. he rarely does this. must know I am reading this thread!

i agree that there are dangers, but our sleep patterns are super calm and light. i can totally not understand not wanting to do it. plus every child is different. it worked great with Noah, and not so great with lyle.

Nursing without co-sleeping was horrible, I felt like a zombie...but we did a little basinet (that ended up getting re-called after the fact!!!), right next to the bed for the first 2-3 motnhs, and then I was like fuck it, and it was okay....BUT, the mattress was put on the floor, I ALWAYS checked it was snuggly against the wall, she slept between me and the wall, and I didn't use any blankets/ pillows, just a sheet over the bottom of my legs, AND I was/ am a VERY light sleeper who doesn't move a centimeter.

That being said, I wasn't conecerned about breaking the habit or that kind of stuff, and before she was born I was 100% against her sleeping in bed, because the saftey stuff is what scares me the most about it, so it defiently isn't for everyone, and should be done safely!

But, yeah, getting up to nurse was literal torture for me! Nursong in bed, not as bad!

On a totally different note: Erin did I fricking tell you congratulations yet?!!!! I am so happy for you!

we have a co-sleeper http://www.armsreach.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3_18_6&products_id=30  that we vought when we had our daughter- never used.  im thinking we might use it this time.  we co slept with my daughter, but our bed now is really high up, plus, we have a pillow top, etc.  it was hard to get dd out of our bed, and most weekend mornings, i wake up to having absolutely no room to move, because theres 3 people and a cat in our bed.  i did love co sleeping, but im thinking this is a much safer way to do it?  it's like he will be in our bed, but in an extension of our bed, where no one can roll on him.

Thanks!  20 weeks Saturday - halfway there!!

And as for the co-sleeping, I have no idea what will actually happen once the baby is here.  And whatever I choose to do, Andy will go along with....at least he better!  But since he'll be working his little butt off to support us while I get to stay home, I'll be somewhat respectful of his wishes when it comes to sleeping.

I love that all the ladies on the co-sleeping topic are being nice and informative!  I'm on a pregnancy home board and the women there just got down right nasty with each other.

mdvegan ~ Things do change once babies arrive.  We'll see if I'm still a non co-sleeper.

bgs ~ Sounds like you were co-sleeping in the safest manner possible.

l2a ~ Thanks for pointing out that each child is different and reacts their own way to the same set of circumstances.

And yay again for all of the new veg*n mommies and soon to be mommies!!  VW is having an epidemic of babies right now.  :)>>>

LLG---I agree, people can get so worked up one way or another! Its all what works for the family! And you'll probably have to do a little experimenting to see what works best!
