A pediatrician with GOOD THINGS TO SAY about my toddler eating a vegan diet!!!

I took my daughter (age 3) to her pediatrician yesterday to get re-immunized (apparently somebody had allowed the vaccines to freeze so previous shots may not have been effective!) and I was already disgruntled. But, I wanted his opinion on cutting out meat from my daughter's diet. We already do not eat dairy or eggs due to her allergies and we don't really eat a lot of meat...it just doesn't appeal to either of us...I guess it's just one of those things that I was taught that I must have at every meal.

So I asked him what he thought about her having a vegan diet and he said it SOUNDS LIKE A FINE IDEA as long as it's healthy vegan, not junk vegan, and that she has B-12 and folic acid supplements!!! YAY!! Then he went on to suggest that I search for some Indian food recipes because those can be easily veganized and gave me a list of ethnic markets in the area to shop at!

I was fully expecting him to say it was an absurd idea and that "children need meat to grow" and all that negativeness that people usually have about the vegan diet (especially since I live in the midwest where their motto is "beef, it's what's for dinner" and breakfast, and lunch, and snacktime.....lol). So I was pleasantly surprised by his reaction and support.

Of course, my family (grandmother, mother) thinks it's an awful idea so I needed to share my positive experience with all of you because I knew you'd understand.

absolutely wonderful!

A doctor... in the midwest... thinks a vegan diet is okay... for children.

I wish you could see the great big smile on my face.  I guess you're off to The Vegan Lunchbox (http://veganlunchbox.blogspot.com/).

Very cool.  :)

Our pediatrician doesn't seem to have an opinion about it.
He just kind of seems like, "Oh your kid's vegan? What are you telling me for?"
I guess him acting like it's the most normal thing in the world isn't bad.  ;)

Definitely cool. When we told our pediatritian that we were planning on raising our daughter vegan, she said, "That's so healthy!" and prceeded to give us the standard B-12 warning.

It's cool to have a pediatrician who knows about and is supportive of a choice like veganism.

And she seems to be doing just fine as a vegan.

Sorry about that. For whatever reason, it won't let me make the gallery public. I click "Apply" and it tells me no change is needed. Then it resets to me only... Hmm... I'll figure this out while not at work.

It's nice to know not all Western docs are narrowminded!  Awesome.

BTW- kids love nutritional yeast, especially on macaroni noodles with a little Earth Balance spread.  It's a wonderful source of B vitamins.

I've already hit up a few recipes off of the vegan lunchbox...'goldfish' crackers were a huge hit! It's cool to see the presentation of her packed lunches, too--very appealing to little munchkins!

It took me a while to figure out the whole nutritional yeast thing....the darn label on the brewer's yeast was misleading and results were gross. Luckily, I happened upon this site and found out that there is a huge difference between the two. My kid LOVES mac and 'cheese' now!

Vegweb rocks!!

Well, thanks all. I'm rather fond of her myself.

She is so adorable. I love the goggles, too. ;) Best to protect the eyes while eating.

Especially the way she eats... ("How can you still have quinoa in you hair?!?! That was 3 days ago!!!")

wow thats really cool. I don't have little ones yet but I plan on making them vegan when they come along...today one of my coworkers was telling me that SHE would never raise a child vegan because she is more intrested in their health than in promoting some cause. I'm not sure why but I got kinda snipity and said..."I know what you mean, Some people fed their children stuff thats so bad for them. I think thats why Ill be sure to raise my kids vegan, cause its good for their health....I think Id feed my two year old bacon like Id feed her rat poison..."

and the fact that he gave you a list of resources really shows he wants you to succeed at it. Good for him! Is he Vegan?

No, he's not vegan. In fact, he said that he's normally a huge meat eater but he had a foreign exchange student once that was vegan and cooked his family meals instead of paying rent. He said that all of the meals were so good (especially the Indian dishes) that he didn't even miss having meat. He also said that he didn't have the discipline to be a vegan, lol.

That argument always gets me. It never seems disciplined, it seems informed from my perspective. At least he's not recommending against it.... so progress is progress, I guess.
