Pregnancy Weight Gain

I'm posting this because I guess I just need some reassurance and whatnot.... Plus, I feel bad about myself. :-\

I feel like I've gained an excessive amount of weight and I'm only at 22 weeks.  I don't know how much of the weight is just plain old "winter" weight.  It has been so long since I've lived anywhere that gets cold in the winter that I haven't had seasonal weight gain in over 5 years.

Weight gain contributors:
- My OB said NO running (and I love running).
- Constant nausea the first 3 (or so) months sent me running to carbs!
- I am so cold here that I don't feel like leaving the house.

Someone make me feel better, give me some encouraging words, advice, special mommy insight.... something!!  Share your stories here!  Kthxbai.

I don't have any mommy insight, but I do know that you are beautiful, and a wonderful, warm person. I don't know how much weight gain is "normal," but that baby will thank you for the nutrients! Then, after the miraculous birth, you can start running again! Can you do any other sort of exercise? I don't know what's good during pregnancy...walking? Hiking? You still able to walk Bella?

You are so sweet to me! :)>>> The recommended weight gain for me is 25-35lbs.  I've already gained 20lbs and I still have 18 weeks to go.  I think weight gain (regardless of the reason) is hard on any woman and especially those with body/weight issues (IE: me).  I think my main problem is motivation.  I see the scale going up, so I think; "Why bother?".  It is a vicious cycle!

I walk and when possible (weather permitting) go hiking.... both with Bella.  I do the elliptical (but not as often as I should).  I need to start using the prenatal workout and yoga DVD's I have.  I should probably start posting in the fitness forum to keep me accountable.

Put the scale away!  I didn't weigh myself during any of my pregnancies, just at the doctor's office.  Regular moderate exercise is ok during pregnancy as long as the doc ok's it, but you should never try and control your weight with exercise during pregnancy.  Your body will do what it needs to do, some women need to gain more than others.  I lost between 15 and 20 lbs with each of my 3 kids during the first 17 weeks because of nausea, but put it all back on once it went away.  I think I then gained between 10 and 20 more lbs total for the 2nd and 3rd trimesters, that was in line with my doc's suggestion.  Keep eating healthy meals and smart snacks, but if your tummy says I'm hungry at 3am, eat!  If you are an active person normally, getting back into working out after your postpartum recovery goes pretty easy. 
If you are concerned, talk to your OB, otherwise don't worry about it.  You are in the best time of your pregnancy, have fun and enjoy it.  I know that by the end of each of mine, I was hungry all the time and was eating round the clock because I couldn't eat very much at one time, even at night. Of course by then I had to pee like every hour so I was already up all the time at night.

As long as you are eating healthy it doesn't matter. You're body really does whatever it want when you're pregnant. You may not gain much near then end, anyway, everyone is different. Who cares? You're having a baby!!! You should enjoy this time to yourself, and consider your self lucky. Best of luck and lots of hugs!

GFVegmom ~ My OB isn't too worried.  I will try to put the scale away.  I have woken up in the middle of the night starving and gotten a snack.  I think since I am so used to counting calories I feel bad by eating whenever I am hungry... but I do eat. :) Thanks for the advice.

nmpixie ~ I care!  I hate that I feel so shallow for it though. :-\ I am thankful for being pregnant (especially since it is not as easy as everyone leads you to believe).  Thanks for you kind words.

Hello!  I have been pregnant twice, the latest being my beautiful baby boy I had 2 weeks ago.  With BOTH my pregnancies I'd gained 20 pounds by the half way mark and by the end had gained 50 pounds.  I was sooo hungry during pregnancy and I decided to just listen to my body and eat because it was telling me it was hungry for a reason.  50 pounds is a lot and I was really worried my first pregnancy, but my doctor never seemed concerned and sure enough it came right off.  I was motivated to lose the weight and I breastfed which burns a lot of calories.  I've lost 20 pounds in the last 2 weeks, some of it baby and fluid, and probably a couple pounds of fat, without trying.  I have 30 pounds to go but I lost it once and I can lose it again.  Please don't worry about your weight gain bottom line.  You may just be one of those people to gain more weight than "normal" but that's ok.  Enjoy your time and take care of yourself, eat as healthy as you can and don't worry about the scale.  The most important thing is to have a healthy baby anyway, right?  ;)b

I was also supposed to gain between 25 and 35 pounds and gained 30, pretty much following the "ideal" weight gain curve precisely, month-by-month (and later week-by-week). My midwife was actually quite amused because apparently not many people follow that silly curve very well.

I agree with the others. Follow a healthy diet full of variety. Eat when you are hungry and stop when you are satisfied (rather than full or stuffed). Keep active within your doctor's guidelines. Your body knows what to do, not the scale.

ETA I didn't think my appetite increased that much when I was pregnant. I ate about the same amount of food as pre-pregnancy, I think, but by the end had to divide up the food into smaller portions because there just wasn't as much room in my digestive tract. Breastfeeding, however...wow. I couldn't/can't stop eating and have to snack all day long!

I'm almost 23 weeks and I'm up 20lbs.... I got there pretty quickly though. (Totally not leaving this up long....)

ok, Lauren, first of all, you still look fantastic!!  You still look really thin to me...just with a baby bump.  But I completely understand your fear of gaining weight.  As you know, we're trying to get pregnant - so far unsuccessfully - but that has got to be my number one fear - as irrational as it might be...I'm already bigger than I'd like to be, and the thought of adding anywhere from 20 to 30lbs on top of that is terrifying!  What if I hit 200lbs?!?!  What if I hit my old highest weight?!?  My friend gained 70lbs with her first child - I don't think I could handle that...
And yeah, I know it's silly to worry about it, and who cares if I get all big and fat for a short period of time...but its all I'm really worried about...not the nausea or the aches and pains...not the labor itself or the recovery...just the weight gain...it sounds so stupid when I say it aloud....
I'm sorry that I don't have any encouraging words...but just know that I feel the same way...if Andy would knock me up already, we could be miserable and fat together :)

You look great! Aside from the belly, you look thin to me-still slender. You're just used to being a little wisp of a thing. Besides, look on the bright side-check out your boobs! I think giant boobs are one of the good things about being preggers.

Your weight gain will probably slow down towards the end.  Most of the weight you've gained so far is amniotic fluid, placenta, extra blood, the baby's bones and muscle, extra boobs and some fat.  The baby does most of their growing in the 2nd trimester...the last few weeks the baby mostly gains fat, which doesn't weigh as much, and you won't be making as much extra blood or amniotic fluid by then.

I gained something like 32lbs when I was pregnant and I felt like a whale...but everyone commented on how small I was.  It's just because I'm used to being thin.  :P Also, if you're planning to breastfeed, it'll come off quickly.  For a while I was more than 10lbs lighter than before I was pregnant (not good...but I seriously couldn't keep any weight on), and I'm still not back up to my pre-pregnancy weight 10 months later.

Eat as much as you need to.  Concentrate on being healthy, not on the number on the scale.  That'll help you get back to where you want to be after the baby's born too.

Lauren, I'm totally unhelpful as a person who hasn't had a baby, but I think you look amazing!!  you're all boobs and belly and you look like a fantastic pregnant mama!
I'm sorry you're not feeling great about yourself, but I'm sure your little guy in there is appreciating all the nutrients you're giving him, and in no time after he arrives you'll be breastfeeding and running and p90x-ing yourself into super shape again!  I hope you can relax a bit and enjoy the awesomeness of the human life you're growing inside you!! How cool is that?!?  : )

woah, you still look totally gorgeous.  You really don't seem to have put much weigt on anywhere except you stomach (and boobies).  Your face doesn't seem to have any extra weight and you arms still look thin.
I really don't think that you seem to have put on too much weight at all going by your photo.

you look so beautiful LLG!!!! I had the horrible nausea too, and lost weight the first trimester, only to gain wayyy too much in the second and third....good news was it all came off and then some with lots of breastfeeding. I also feel like I didn't take enough pics, because I felt overweight and ugly, but now looking back at the ones I do have I think its cute, so i would also say take lots and lots of pictures, you will probably want them some day (even if right now they make you feel bad).
  So enjoy it and try not to freak out, you look great and baby is healthy :)

Thanks for all the kind comments ladies.  I'm "softer" now (since I'm not lifting), so I think that is adding to my stress.  I haven't stepped on the scale in a while!  I am really just trying to focus on eating properly and doing some kind of light exercise everyday.  I am very motivated to lose the weight and get back to working out (I miss it!). 

Erin ~ I am here for you when it happens and I will tell you that you are gorgeous every single day if you need it.  It is nice to know that other women struggle with their body image while pregnant (and not) and that it is completely normal.  I think we really are our own worst critics.

Oww ~ I fully expect you to hold me to P90X! ;)

bgs ~ I try to take weekly pictures.... just with my phone (so, they aren't super fancy), but it is better than nothing.  I'm also thinking of getting professional maternity photos done because EVERYONE I know has told me I will want them afterwards.

pg & hopfrog & Chibi ~ I am planning on BF-ing.  Hopefully, that works out for me because I am quite nervous about it.  At some point I've got to get over to that thread for some encouragement, tips and tricks.

BTW: The baby really likes vanilla soymilk.  Everytime I drink he starts (like) dancing (or something) in there.
