A vegan halloween...
I posted this with my introduction in the intro forum, but I was suggested to post it here...any ways, I was wondering what do you do for your vegan family on Halloween? I have a 16 months old daughter and another daughter due Christmas Eve, so I don't quite have to worry about Halloween yet, as neither know what it is, but I'm curious as to what other parents do when they do start asking to go out. From what I've seen, the majority of the candy is not vegan, and I'd rather not have my children go around collecting candy that they can't eat...however, I also don't want to deprive them of this holiday and force them to feel isolated from their friends, and have them resent me for it...so I was looking for advice from other vegan families :)

Growing up, I had a friend with allergies. Her parents drove her to a few family members homes for okay candy and then she had a Halloween party at their place.
My vegetarian (not vegan) kids go and collect candy with their friends or cousins.
While they're out a witch calls and leaves me instructions for a spell.
When the kids come home, they are always disappointed that they've missed talking with the witch again.... but I give them the instructions for the spell... when they were little the spell would instantly change all the candy into a cool new toy... now that they're bigger, once the spell is cast, it ususally takes all night... but the end result is the same... they wake up to a cool new toy.
The witch does what she wants with the candy but I suspect the real crap sugar coated sugar goes in the trash... and the chocolate gets left on the breakroom table at the witch's office.... ;)b

I think the witch needs to come to our house in a year or two. Thanks for letting me know about her!
The witch trick seems to be a nice idea. Sadly, this won't work forever. How about anyone with teenagers?

I am totally stealing this, rivy would probably like that a whole lot more than me just throwing it away in front of her... ( >:D evil mother!! >:D) We also haven't carved pumpkins, but have a fun little ceremony as we stick her pumpkin in the oven to be cooked up :D

I decided to skip the witch story part and offered my boys a Lego toy if they would exchange all the candy they collected for it. My 8 yr old took the deal right away, reasoning that the candy is gone after he eats it but the Legos could be played with for a long time. My 5 yr old said no... but will probably follow his older brother later on.
