When you have to put down a pet.....
Our cat had to be put down on Friday. I will spare you the details, but it was time.
Noah was at school, and the appointment was for after school. We almost went ahead and just did it while he was away, and were just going to tell him she died. THen I spoke with a friend who thought I should let him say good bye in person beforehand. I met him after school, told him THE TRUTH about what was going on, and my friend was right. He wanted to say good bye, he went to the appointment with my husband, and even helped to bury her. We each chose something small to put in the ground with her. He drew a lovely picture of our family with her. They cried together the whole time, and I am SOOO Proud of him for making that choice (the other choice was to stay and play with friends after school). I'm also glad I wised up and told him the truth. I didn't think he would really understand the whole "we're putting the cat to sleep on purpose" idea. He is 9. We did not do it this way when we had to put down the dog when he was 5, but he has grown up a lot since then. I think more so than I even know!
Just thought I'd put it out there, as I'm sure many of us will have to deal with kids losing pets at some point. :'(
Are you actively trying to make me bawl at work?
Great job. You get an A+ for parenting.
ahhh, putting a pet down is the worst. Noah is such an amazing kid!
I'm sorry about your cat, l2a.
But I agree, you did an awesome job with Noah....I wouldn't have known what to do either.
Sorry about your cat, l2a. Losing a pet is so, so, so hard, even for us grownups.
I think you handled the situation with Noah well. This may be seen as cold by some, but I plan to always be truthful with my child even when it hurts. Truthful in a way that she can understand, but still truthful.
