Superstar VegWebber of the Week: NewShoes522!

NewShoes522 gives some of the best answers to the questionnaire that I've ever read. I think you'll enjoy them as much as I did and check out her profile too: http://vegweb.com/index.php?action=profile;u=81307

VegWebber since? November 2007... but I was a lurker for at least the first year. It's only in the past few months I've mustered up the courage to finally venture into the light.

Vegetarian, Vegan or ?? I defy labels  Hehe. No, really, I don't really like classifying myself as "vegan" because I think that word has a different meaning for different people, and I'd be lying to myself if I didn't acknowledge that just by virtue of living in a modern society I do consume products that have been derived from the slaughter or mistreatment of animals. I try to live my life by the principle do the least harm possible... For the most part my diet would be what most consider "vegan"; I try to avoid all consuming any products that inflict harm on other sentient beings.  I've chosen to live my life as consciously and compassionately as possible... Maybe I'm not a vegan in the pure sense of the word, but I can say I do my very best to live in service to Love.

Where do you call home? Texas

What do you do when you're not on VegWeb? I'm a student in every sense of the word! If I'm not online, you are almost certain to find me immersed in one of my two favorite activities: absorbing new knowledge or practicing yoga (in some ways, you could say that those two things are actually one in the same!). I spend a lot of time on campus doing academic-related activities (research in the lab, studying for classes, etc), and when the school day comes to an end I head straight to yoga class. I also like to listen to music, read, and people at the local coffee shop watch while sippin' a nice cup o' tea.

Do you have blog or website? Is Facebook considered a website?

Do you tweet? No, no, no. I'm a little bit hyper-connected as it is; I don't need any more internet addictions.

One unique thing should know about you? I drive a scooter. It's loads of fun to zoom around town, and it saves me bunches on gas.

What’s the best thing about being vegan? (if you are!) Living my life in accordance with my experience of Love. (Note: One could substitute the word Love for God, Divinity, Truth, Buddha-- whatever it is that fills you with a sense of purpose in life)

Favorite romantic recipe on VegWeb? Hmm... good question. I'm afraid I'm not qualified to answer that one. Hope to have an answer for you soon!

Favorite recipe on VegWeb to make for non-vegans to show them how amazing vegan food can be? General Tao's Tofu

One thing you wish you could make vegan but haven’t succeeded at yet? Cottage cheese

#1 Cooking secret/tip? Discover the art of oatmeal. The possibilities are endless I tell you! I'm like Bubba's family in Forest Gump, 'cept my ingredient is oatmeal instead of shrimp. You've got your plain oatmeal, traditional oatmeal with cinnamon and sugar, Mama's applie pie oatmeal (oven baked with sauteed apples), salt n pepper oatmeal, chinese take-out oatmeal (with broccoli and soy sauce), IHOP oatmeal (with maple syrup), the list goes on and on....

Best music to cook by? The Rebel Rockers album by Michael Franti & Spearhead... way to infuse your food with good vibes

Three people you'd most like to have dinner with? Albert Einstein (I'd love to hear what he really meant by "God doesn't play dice with the universe..", Eve Ensler (of the Vagina Monologues), and Joseph Campbell (of Hero with a Thousand Faces and The Power of Myth)... but not necessarily together!!!

All time favorite restaurant? This AMAZING restaurant in Dallas called Kalachandji's. It's a Hare Krishna temple in which the devotees cook fresh vegetarian fare based on the principles of ayurvedic cooking. The menu is changed daily according to whatever is fresh and in season. The setting is beautiful, the people are incredibly kind, and the food actually tastes like it was made with love!

French fries or ice cream? Ice cream (assuming it's made without dairy products)

Soy milk, rice milk, almond milk? Soy please

Tempeh, tofu or seitan? Tofu if I'm cooking, seitan if it's someone else. What can I say? I'm a bit lazy and still a sort of novice with seitan, so cooking seitan from scratch requires quite a bit of elbow grease on my part!

Congrats!
I love your oatmeal obsession!

It'd be cool if we lived closer together and could have a Bubba Oatmeal party, where all of the dishes were different preparations of oatmeal.  I could totally get behind that.

YES! That would too cool. And Lotus, you'd definitely have to join us. In between oatmeal tastings we could get our down-dogs on. :)

Thank you all for your kind words. This thread has totally made my week. I feel so grateful to be a part of the VW community. Sometimes, I wish we could have a little city of Vegweb where you were all my neighbors and I could sit and share long talks with you over coffee. Y'all are awesome.  :)>>>
