That's a tough question!  There is this one pizza shop in The Alb that sells vegan pizza, but is not even a vegetarian restaurant, so I'd have to say that.

Buffalo Chicken Drumsticks at Red Bamboo in NYC....95% of the people that go there get them as an appetizer

The Avocado Sushi Roll at a local Asian bistro called Peony.  It serves Chinese, Japanese, and Thai foods and lots of different sushi and shasimi rolls, but the Avocado rolls are wonderful and they're only avocado, seaweed, cucumber, and rice...

I've learned by experience that it is safest to go with a veggie stir fry.

Most non-vegans have a lot of trouble understanding our lifestyle.  For instance, I've ordered veggie pizza with NO CHEESE ...and the waiter brought me a veggie and cheesy pizza.  The waiter noticed the kitchen's mistake and went back to the kitchen to order my pizza again, afterwhich a SECOND cheese pizza came my way.  Apparently the cooks just couldn't wrap their head around a pizza without cheese...  I've also ordered vegetable sandwiches and veggie burgers that were unexpectedly served with mayonnaise.  Pooey.

Therefore, a vegetable stir fry is the safest and tastiest entree I can order at a non-veg restaurant.

When I was still doing the vegan diet, my favorite thing to order at a non-veg restaurant was broccoli rabe with penne in garlic and oil.  I'd bring the vegan Parmesan cheese with me and sprinkle away.   :)>>>

It is still a favorite of mine.

At a great restaurant about 20 min. from where I live they have a great Falafel Bake hot sandwich with spinach, tomatoes, red onions & hummus. Oh my. I'm hungry just typing this!

I love veggie fajitas with lots of rice and guac on the side at mexican places. Plus the Aladdin's near my apt has awesome vegan selections (mmmmm, falafel)
i pretty much love anywhere that has mango juice or smoothies :)

At Mexican restaurants I order veggie fajitas; at Italian restaurants I get pasta with tomato sauce (the cappellini pomodoro at Macaroni Grill is very good); at Asian places I get veggie stir-fry with tofu.  Sometimes I get stuck going to steak or seafood places (with my non-veg family and friends) where about all you can get is a dry salad and dry baked potato.  Not my favorites.

Greetings from Calgary, Alberta!!

My favorite thing to order at a non-vegan restaurant -- is a veggie pizza without the cheese (with extra veggies to replace the cheese.) People are usually surprised by the request but the pizzas are usually quite tasty. It seems that the chef worries what the flavor will be like with no meat or cheese and piles on lots veggies -- I am happy with that!

We do not eat out that much because it is very difficult to really know if what you are eating is free of animal or dairy products. Pizza dough, sauce and veggie toppings are a fairly safe bet.

Thank you to vegweb -- so many terrific recipes we have made from this site!

This is definitely something I struggle with.  Usually pasta with red sauce or veggie pizza with no cheese, as mentioned above.

A portabella sandwich. A surprising amount of places have one. Plus, when you say "no cheese" they're quite receptive to you substituting other toppings/more veggies on there.

If that fails, most places can do a combo of garlic, veggies olive oil and pasta if you ask. Even Bob Evans has hooked a family up!

um.....hate to burst your bubble....but at both of the pizza joints I've worked at, there was milk powder in their flour mix....one even added romano cheese to their sauce. They both were chains though, so when it comes to small independent stores, you're probably safe, at least with the dough.

I'd have to go with either burritos or spaghetti.  They're comfort foods of sorts, what can I say.  =)

My favourite is  A yam tempura sushi roll, not all tempura is vegan so you have to ask if it is. Also hummus is always good!

I'm happy to see how many places around me have added pita and hummus to their bar menu. As documented here, I struggle with bar food, usually just going for the cheesy/creamy thing. No more!

Thai restaurants generally have great vegan dishes for being a ombi establishment.

I have a horrible, disgusting, secret habit of loving the 7 layer (but only ordering 5 layers) burrito at Taco Bell. Sshhhh!!!.... Don't tell anyone.
