I went to a really small, really crappy Catholic school until sixth grade. You could choose which days to get the hot lunch that came in weird foil boxes, and we ate lunch in the church basement..siigh. Those were the days.
Anyway, the best lunches (the ones EVERYONE would get) were the pizza (only the kind called "Mama Donita's; the Tony's kind was gross) and the nachos with fakey but delicious cheese sauce and chili. The nachos were good because they came with Curious George fruit snacks, and those were quality haha.
Worst would be salisbury steak. There were always weird noogies in it. Like..hard bits that were not meat. Ugh.
I never ate cafeteria lunch in high school, except occasionally when I'd get pretzels or pasta salad and those were just meh.
my mom usually made our lunches for us, but i remember one school lunch consisting of bland corn, soupy mashed potatoes, and greasy, greasy fried chicken. the school was in germany and you had to BUY napkins if you wanted/needed one. so, my sister and i used our slice of tasteless white bread as our napkins that day. :P
Oh my dad packed the most beautiful veg*n lunches-- he baked his own tofu (that was back before you could find baked tofu in the grocery store) and made tofu sandwiches with grainy mustard and sprouts and roasted red peppers. Or hummus sandwiches-- seriously the man was so before his time, he was making the most delicious hummus on the East Coast in the 80s!
I honestly don't remember disgusting school lunches- I'm sure they were terrible, but I was that lucky (read: DORKY) kid who always had a brown bag.
The worst lunch I've ever had was this really bad deep-dish pizza they used to serve in the elementary school I went to in first grade. I know, it seems hard to fuck up pizza, but this was BAD. I was an off-the-boat Russian immigrant who had never had pizza before, and I thought I HATED pizza all because of the stuff they served there. Really bland, soggy, just terrible.
In elementary school I was always excited when it was Sloppy Joe day! The sauce was what made it soooo good!!!! The bread was so soft and the sauce wasn't watery so the bread never got soggy. If I had the recipe I would so try it now with veggie crumbles!! Mmmmm.... :)>>>
As for BAD lunches, well that was pretty much every OTHER day!! :(
In highschool, my dad used to make me the same lunch every day: Chopped ham lunch meat, white bread, mayonaise with an apple and a little debbie dessert and juice box. bleh. But, he always put a note on my napkin. :)
Also, once in highschool, the burger from the cafeteria was actually green. NO joke!
When I was a wee, budding vegetarian in 2nd grade, I once had to buy peanut butter and jelly from the lunch line. They make the jelly so thick! It's like an inch of jelly and peanut butter, each. I don't like jelly that much, so I thought it was so gross. I probably didn't even eat it.
We were forced to eat our entire lunches whenever the librarian had lunch duty in elementary. I shoved my peas into my milk container, which she then poured out and forced me to eat.
And, no, Lotus, I REALLY want this! :-D
in Jr. high, I had a fish stick sandwich :o it was so gross, undercooked fish sticks on a soggie hamburger bun with gross tarter sauce...the fries were just as bad..soggie and limp......YUK
When I ate them, I thought the chalupas served at school were the absolute best - a deep-fried corn-tortilla-type shell, filled with tons of melted cheese. And, optionally, shredded lettuce on top.
Now I look back and think "worst lunch evar!" because seriously, melted cheese on a chip-thing? What kind of school lunch program is that?
meatloaf and hamburger days were the worst.
cheese pizza ,applesauce and butterscoth pudding were pretty good
In elementary school, i was always a packer (even before going veg) but I really really loved peanut butter squares. I brought an extra .15c so I could buy one after I ate my lunch. Yum.
In HS I ate icecream and cheesesteaks almost every day. I really liked them. BLech!!!!!
so, it was the best and the worst, I guess.
The worst school lunch I can remember is the yearly Thanksgiving meal they served at my elementry school...it was turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes (instant), and cranberry sauce mixed together served cassarole-style and topped with the nastiest congealed brown gravy.
Haha I was going to say the same thing but ours wasn't even a casserole. That Thanksgiving dinner was so gross at school. I loved deep dish pizza at school though.
peanut butter and jam sandwich, hands down.
I went to school back in the day when schools had actual cafeterias and a full-time cook to prepare our meals. Our cook was Trudy. She was awesome.
I don't remember my favorite meal. I didn't like Macaroni and Glue days - she used white cheese.
Two categories: Packed and bought
Packed, best: garlic bean salad. It was seriously delicious.
Packed, worst: When my parents packed my lunch. It was a plastic grocery bag full of pre-packaged chips, a piece of fruit, and a pudding cup...every day for years.
Bought, best: a veggie pesto wrap that was only sold my freshman year of HS.
Bought, worst: to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday, my elementary school made green eggs and ham, and everyone had to buy it. Needless to say, green-colored eggs and ham are NOT appealing.
The worst lunch I've ever had was during my Freshman year. I had just moved into an apartment, and I didn't have much food in my apartment. So I wound up eating a can of black beans, an apple, and a handful of chips. Not a good combination.
Our school was decently healthy, rewarding students who made "healthier" choices. However, thinking back towards my vegetarian days, I vividly remember forgetting my lunch at home and being famished at lunchtime only to hurry into the caf's grab 'n go section and grabbing a caesar salad wrap. That thing had brown, limp lettuce leaves with dollops of icky caesar sauce all wrapped in a stale wrap. I was more or less forced to have that since the other 'vegetarian' option was egg salad, and I disliked that to begin with.
Sad to say that after turning vegan, the grab 'n go items were completely off limits, making me more vigilant at packing a lunch- and remembering it!
NZ schools don't have the cafetaria setup that US schools do so I pretty much always brought my own food - a little vegetarian girl in a rural farming area of NZ in the 1990s doesn't get on so well with the only items available to buy: mince pies or sausage rolls!
So the worst lunch I ever had (well the only one that stuck in my memory) was when I was about 5 and stayed at my friend's house. Her mum made us honey sandwiches for to take to school for lunch and I have always HATED honey so I wouldn't eat them (I tried, miserably) and wasn't allowed to leave the lunch area and play because I wouldn't eat my food... next time I went back I told her mum that I was allergic to honey and she couldn't give me honey sandwiches :P
Best lunches were always leftovers, like my Mum's famous pie... so much more exciting than sandwiches!
undercooked donuts :(
