It's so pretty :) Story is...epic, not overly subtle, hard to handle in some parts, but still a good yarn :) And did I mention it's pretty?

I could have done without the part where Neytiri shows Jake how to kill animals "properly"- by thanking them! People actually use this as an excuse for why they aren't vegetarian "Oh the animals give their lives to us and we thank them, it's so spiritual".

It was Pochohontas.  Jazzed up. Haha. Really, same story line basically.

But it was really good, all the animals made me giggle.

I enjoyed it too, but couldn't escape the feeling that I'd seen it many times before. It's been called "Dances with Smurfs" and compared to Ferngully. But actually, Titanic was full of cliches, too. Maybe that's just Cameron's style. Once a movie or song is a few years old, people stop seeing it as cliched.

Here's another vegan's interesting take: http://www.snargleplexon.com/2009/12/21/avatar/

I kept thinking "The Last Samurai" when I was watching it.

I absolutely loved it. Maybe I'm a too easily"wowed", but I found the film was both visually and intellectually invigorating. Yes, in some ways it was a jazzed up recasting of Pochahantas, but that's what movies do! They recast the myths and stories our ancestors have been telling for thousands of years in a way that is relevant to modern day society. Cameron also wove in some other stories and themes as well. There were allusions to the European colonization of the African continent, depictions of speciesism and racism, and of course potent messages about environmentalism and conservation. I was a little bit turned off by the  us vs. them mentality of the characters, but I think that's sort of inherent in the type of story portrayed in this film.

The graphics and special effects were absolutely stunning. Every once in a while I found myself longing to visit Pandora, but then I'd remember that the planet doesn't actually exist! I think it's definitely worth paying the extra $2 to see this movie in 3D while it's in theaters. I kept feeling like I was in one of those virtual rollercoasters they have at Disney World!

Critics will always find something to bemoan about a film, but I thoroughly enjoyed Avatar.  ;)b Two thumbs up! ;)b

I saw the movie and it was awesome....I haven't seen it in 3D yet but the wife and I will soon....It always seems to be sold out....

All the hidden messages in the movie make it that much more awesome....The writer is very aware to say the least.....

I thought "Avatar" was an interesting exploration of corporate greed (an alien land invaded for a rare and very valuable  mineral) and the rights of indigenous peoples/non-humans.  I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't seen the movie.  My DH and I watched "District 9" last night and it's theme of how humans treat those who aren't human, in this case the "wretched of outer space" (reference Frantz Fanon's "Wretched of the Earth") is interesting to a card carrying PETA member like myself.  Too bad the "prawns" couldn't be vegan.  :D

My bf & I both thought this movie was visually awesome, we saw it in 3D! As far as the story line, nothing we've not heard or seen before. My bf says it's The Last Samurai/Dances with Wolves meets The Smurfs on steroids....hehe!

I thought the plot was stale and the characterization was ham-handed. But hoooly crap, was it ever pretty. I saw it in 3D on an imax screen... WOW. I think I spent the whole movie sitting there thinking 'this is stupid and I'M LOVING IT.' A fairly mediocre plot feels a lot more gripping and powerful because it feels a lot more real. I mean, we feel pretty strongly about things that happen in  real life that would frankly look stupid in a work of fiction... and, I mean, ten foot tall sexy aliens and bio-luminescent sentient plants and floating mountains and... YES.

I just saw it and thought it was sooooooooooooo awesome! I saw it in 3D! I want to buy it on video when it comes out...

The blue people reminded me of Native Americans and how Americans stole everything from them and killed them because they had something Americans wanted... I cried a few times... Both times were when they destroyed their precious trees :( and seeing how upset all the blue people were :( at least Avatar had a happy ending... Native Americans weren't so lucky

Over here it's already out on DVD though they just released it to cinema like 3 weeks ago. I dunno if it's a pirate DVD or not, but I don't think so, given the place where I saw it for sale. Looks like they wanna make the money on it as fast as they can.

This is pretty much why I won't be seeing it. I have heard enough about how it simply replays colonialization (in this case the taking of indigenous land/culture and animalizing them) that I just don't want to put my money on it.

(Also, hooray for Fanon!)
