Best vegetarian restaurant I've ever eaten at burns

Mother's Cafe in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Austin was accidentally set on fire by a homeless man.

There's a photo on the Stateman's main page.  It looks nearly all burned up to me.  :'(

I was looking forward to eat there when we visit Austin this summer!

Aww, I kind of feel bad for the guy that started the fire too.  Do you know of any way to contact the owner to see if they plan to reopen one day?

They have a website:  www.motherscafeaustin.com and when you click on "Contact"  eval(unescape('%64%6f%63%75%6d%65%6e%74%2e%77%72%69%74%65%28%27%3c%61%20%68%72%65%66%3d%22%6d%61%69%6c%74%6f%3a%63%61%6c%65%78%61%6e%64%72%40%61%75%73%74%69%6e%2e%72%72%2e%63%6f%6d%22%3e%63%61%6c%65%78%61%6e%64%72%40%61%75%73%74%69%6e%2e%72%72%2e%63%6f%6d%3c%2f%61%3e%27%29%3b'))  pops up in your email program.  I think it's a little early to contact them; they're probably still in shock.  It happened just this morning.

As for the homeless guy, going home to family in Virginia (if he has any) might be the best thing for him.  Austin can be a tough place to make a living in, my personal experience and I've heard lots of stories from other folks.  I guess it's like any big city, though.

Awww I'm sorry! Is that the good place you were trying to go when you had to resort to Subway??

Can I just tell you that when I read the subject line on this I thought you didn't mean burns as in "fire"....
I thought you meant like.... "Best vegetarian restaurant I've ever eaten at burns... the second time around."  ::) duh me.

No, Mothers Cafe is in Austin.  I was in Del Rio.  The Thai restaurant I wanted to eat at isn't totally vegetarian but it does have a vegetarian section on the menu.  I still haven't determined why they were closed.  As for the Austin restaurant, an new article on the website says that the kitchen wasn't damaged and once it's cleaned up (from the smoke probably), they plan to put tents up in the parking lot and serve from there.  I admire their " carry on best we can" attitude.

;D  No, duh me.  I was thinking "Best vegetarian restaurant I've ever eaten at burns" like, best veg restaurant is called burns.  Let's blame the new mommy brain.  Yeah, that's a good excuse. ::)

OK, I'm gonna 'fess up too.  My first thought had something to do with heartburn or overly spicy food!  :P  I don't have any excuse for my brain working that way, it is just natural.

I think it's awesome that they are going to serve out of tents.  I would totally go there if I lived nearby.  "Roughing it" for the sake of good food...

I definitely need to work on my phraseology.  ;D

Really??  I had a great time when I lived there...except that crappy ex-boyfriend....so, I left him there.  Austin is a fun place though...very eclectic and it doesn't surprise me one bit that they're going to serve from tents out front!  ;D

Mother's Cafe was mentioned in the most recent VegNews in an article about Austin (p. 53, "HerbivoreHaunts").
