Favourite Independent/Obscure Films?

I love independent films. I love obscure films. My latest jewel-like find is a Swedish film called "Kitchen Stories". It's about a bunch of "efficiency experts" who are trying to improve kitchen usage to cut down on steps, trips across the room etc. in Sweden of the 1950s. And who is their next target group? The Swedish bachelor farmers, of course!

It's splendidly bizarre, touching and sweet. The end is in the wrong place, because they decided to continue on for another 15 min and have a more "realistic" ending, which was silly of them. But it's definitely good.

What are some of your favourites?

The greatest independent film of all time is Clerks.  I love that movie and all of the Kevin Smilth works that I've seen.

Kitchen Stories is one of my favorite movies!  So good!  Thank you yabbitgirl for reminding me, I need to get a copy of that.
Man without a Past (2002) is also good.  It's part of a trilogy, but I haven't seen the other two.

I need to check some of these out.

Erin, you guys have an Xbox?  Add me and play games with me (when I get my tv fixed).  My gamertag is H8SAVRTU.
Anyone else who owns a 360 should go ahead and add me too.

Ohh! The Cube trilogy! Some of the acting was a little silly, but it was interesting. I thought the third one (which is actually a prequel..like it takes place before the first film) was the best. I also agree about Let The Right One In.

Hm.
May and He Was A Quiet Man were good. I think I'll come back with more later. My fingers hurt from bassoon (they keep locking up at the joints too  :-\ ) so it's hard to type.

I would never class the Trois Couleurs films as "obscure" but they are French; however here in Europe they are/were HUGE. When they came out on DVD they sold like hotcakes, even where I live.

Now for truly obscure French film, I would recommend "Brodeuses" which  I believe has the US title, "A Common Thread."
Not obscure in Europe, but a great independent film, "Les Choristes."

And obscure but excellent, anything made by Marianne Sagebrecht. I direct your attention to
Bagdad Cafe (US title "Out of Rosenheim")
Rosalie Goes Shopping (dated, but fun)
Charlotte
I have yet to be able to see SugarBaby but if she's in it it must be good.

And the truly obscure 1989 German/US film, "Doctor M" (US title Club Extermination) with--hang on to yourselves--Jennifer Beals. That's right, the girl from Flashdance. The bad guy is some sort of emotional vampire that lives off fear, death etc. Not bloody or unpleasant, just extremely obscure.

Do documentaries work?  If so I'd vote for The Corporation, and The Yes Men.
