Gee Mommy...I want skim milk!

Scientists in New Zealand have now "created" a cow that produces skim milk. Maybe soon they can develop women that produce only skim milk....or chocolate milk?....or strawberry shakes?.....I'm waiting until they produce one of you girls that can produce a frappacino out of your breasts...that would be soooo cool! :D

Select Quotes:
"The scientists also say the milk is high in omega-3 oils, said to be good for the heart and essential for growth in young children."

And who do these so scientists work for?
"Scientists from ViaLactia, a biotechnology offshoot of giant dairy cooperative Fonterra"

This is exciting work they are doing! I had one question.....what about the baby cows when they are born?.....are they supposed to drink skim milk too? :-\

I bet the next step is eliminating the baby all together. They're probably working on engineering cows that produce milk without pregnancy as we speak.

And personally, frapuccino? I'd rather it be a chai latté. Of course, it would be kind of weird to drink your own mammary secretions, wouldn't it?

Strawberry shakes come from red-heads, right?

Interesting.  Personally, I'd prefer to produce whiskey.  Hey science, got any ideas for that?

Ohhhh very funny!!!!

In point of fact though, human milk is very sweet tasting.  I could never bring myself to taste it because, well, I was taught we don't drink our OWN body fluids!  I have had more than one older child, over the age of 5 ask for some when I would be nursing a baby and I gave it to them.  They all said: YUM! That baby sure is lucky!  I had to remind them that is what they got when they were little.  I had one ask why milk out of the bottle in the frig didn't taste as good.  Well, my milk is nature's perfect human baby food, hun.

I might be the only freak on here that would do this, but I would actually want to try my own breast milk some day.  Just to see what it tasted like...  I don't really think that is gross at all...  And besides, I have drank worse things then that in the past!  :-X

Kendrakat, you're not a freak!
Anyone ever see the Friends episode with the breast milk and they were all grossed out that one of them tried some?  For some reason, it's weird to drink human breast milk but not weird to drink the breast milk of any other species? But, I guess it would be the same as eating the flesh of another animal and not a human. It's all kind of *freaky* if you think about it...

I don't think it would be weird.
We're the human species. Technically, we're supposed to drink our own milk when we are being raised.
I never saw the point in drinking other species milk. It theirs. Plus you don't see alligators or kangaroos drinking cows milk right?

it's like my sister was totally freaked out when someone told her that somewhere they eat dogs and cats. and I asked her why it is any different from eating a cow or a pig. and she said because they're pets! why is it okay to drink another species milk but not our own? (not that I would drink my own milk.. i like my soymilk thanks ;))

umm..breastmilk is really sweet. not too bad, but we don't do milk here...well, rice milk..
And not to be the party pooper, but, if she is producing low fat milk, wouldn't that be inadequate to support the growth of her calf/calves? kind of like us producing low fat breastmilk. hubby and I can't see her calves being able to live off her lowfat milk, so why should people? something so wrong with this...

I don't think it's weird at all to taste your own breastmilk! I actually think it's normal. I'd want to know what my baby found so delicious.

I think it's weird to drink milk made for calfs. Or milk made for goats. I do not, at all, think it's weird to drink milk made for humans.

I was actually wondering if I could make stuff with breastmilk when the time comes. Like ice cream.  ;D

I think it's totally bizzare that scientists would want to produce a cow that makes skim milk. Omega 3's can be found in many products. Humans certainly don't need milk for it. Plus, eating all omega 3's is unhealthy. There has to be a balance between omega 6 and omega 3.

Isn't there something more important that scientists could do? Like cure cancer. Just a thought.

Well, you swallow your own saliva, what's a little of your own breast milk? I'd rather taste my own than someone else's, which might be misconstrued--not that that's ever going to arise.... (early here, shut up Anna).
I just heard an old recording of George Carlin's (when his jokes were new and unrecycled) and laughed about the "discovery" that saliva causes cancer, but only if swallowed in small amounts over a long period of time...

Aww Kendrakat! I wouldn't mind trying my own breast milk either. You might have drank it as a baby, why is it so wierd to drink it as an adult?

That would be cool to make ice cream out of it! Hmm... What about cheese? LOL!  ;D

I kind of feel the the same way about drinking human breast milk as I do going topless at the beach. I know in the back of my mind that it's not a big deal, yet I think I might be just too inhibited to do it.

Do we really need Frakencows? Is it really that hard to, like, eat some kale or something?

I am the woman with 6 kids and only 1 way of parenting a baby...when it doubt, whip one out!

I was fairly inhibited when before I had kids.  After bearing my bum for 3 doctors and 4 nurses, not to mention almost my whole family when I had my first, I figured a breast was a pretty minor thing to display.  I breastfed each until they were around 2.  Yes, a couple of them bit me, but not regularly and it was not a problem.  I did work outside the house with the first and yes, I pumped and continued to breastfeed and with him, exclusively for 5 months.  It can be done, but you have to be committed to breastfeeding.  Contrary to what you might think, it DOES NOT come naturally.  One has to be taught the proper way to hold the baby.  They have to be encouraged to feed at the last whimper of the baby even it was only an hour and half previously.  The best way to have plenty is sleep with your baby and let them nurse in the night sleeping beside you.  You get more sleep that way, which is also important to milk production.  I can also tell you that most doctors and nurses do not know that much about the process of breastfeeding, even if they encourage it.  Still, in the 21st Century when we know the benefits of breastfeeding, including the fact that it turns off the body's cholesterol making machine, that this is still something that is considered "peasant" and something that we are still arguing about seeing done in public.

I saw an episode of Penn and Teller's series on Showtime.  They love breastages and talked about how STUPID and what BULL**** not being able to breastfed in public is and that people who are objecting have their heads up a certain orifice.  I loved it because they are right.

Honestly, the roughest part of breastfeeding was having extremely sore nipples at first with my first one.  I cracked and bled and yelled some, but I stuck it out.  I look at their health, their size (all enormously tall) and think you know it was all so so worth it.  It also sends a special message to kids, I think.  You push them out of your body and feed them from your body and you tell them that you are available to him.  Yeah, at first it is your shirt that is open, but later it becomes your heart and your ears.  I know that breastfeeding makes a woman's body release certain hormones, but I think some of these effects last a lifetime for mom AND child.  I am close with my kids to this day and it is different, but as intense for all of us as the breastfeeding experience was...very strong attachments.
