did you know you could have the library transfer books from other libraries?

ha, yeah I was aware of that, I'm just too lazy to go all the way to the library t oorder it in and then have to go back when they have it in....which can take ages ass I'm only allowed to get them transferred in from the same borrough, and our borrough isn't all that great.

I just picked up this at a used bookstore.

Carol Adams came to my school a year or two ago and did a very interesting presentation about this topic. A big part of her presentation was a slide show of ads she'd come across, or those people had sent to her, that showed the way women and animals are "othered" and objectified in the same ways in advertisements. It was eye opening - and disgusting! But I'm excited to read something that connects the oppression of women with the oppression of animals...I'm of the mind that all oppression is connected, so it's good to see that recognized.

I'm also reading this, which I picked up because I love Montreal! :)

That book looks awesome! I'm going to have to keep my eyes peeled for it at my local Half-Price Books. I'm taking a course right now called Monstrous Women in Science Fiction and Film, so the topic of the portrayal of feminine bodies in popular media has definitely been at he forefront of my mind. I actually just finished a digital media project on the depiction of women's breasts in sci-fi film/lit as compared to mainstream culture. It's available on YouTube if anyone wants to watch it...

The objectification of women and animals in advertising is a really interesting topic. Unfortunately, it seems like even those with apparently "good intentions" play a part in contributing to the oppression of stigmatized or disempowered groups (women, animals, etc). Not to start a fight with anyone who's a fan of PETA, but while  I was researching for that project I was appalled at some of the images I came across...

I'm reading The Way We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter by Peter Singer and Jim Mason.  I really like it so far (haven't gotten to the section on vegans yet.)

Right before that, I read The Wordy Shipmates by Sarah Vowell, appropriately on my trip to Boston.  It's about the Puritans who founded the Massachusetts Bay Colony.  It was funny, educational and thought-provoking.

That Arby's ad is just...ugh. But it reminds me of a girl in highschool they called "Big Mac", even though she was short and had a German surname. When I asked my brother why the nickname he replied, "Two all-beef patties..."

I cruised by the university bookstore this morning and picked up 2 collections of plays from the sale table: Noel Coward, and Four Jacobean Sex Plays (Middleton, Beaumont and Fletcher--not that Middleton is Jacobean, he was early Elisabethan/late Tudor, but he did have a revival then). Not the Coward plays I wanted but maybe I can order them later.
Lady Chablis' book hasn't come in yet. The 2 I bought cost me a third of the price of the special order. Sigh.

Trying to read an Australian novel called "Landscape of Farewell." Good writing but I don't find the main character at all sympathetic. Maybe I'm not supposed to.

Someday, I will read as smart (and often) as yabbitgirl.

In the meantime... I ditched my "Faerie Queen" effort, for now. I will go back to it, as I was enjoying it, but my wife dropped a book in my lap for Christmas that I've been taking my sweet time with.

The book? "The Case For God" by Karen Armstrong. It is one hell of a crash course in human thought - religious, philosophical and scientific - and human development. IT's fascinating, challenging and full of footnotes (which I am checking out far too many of... part of why it's taking me so long to read it.).

Unless you are a die-hard, evangelical atheist or die-hard, evangelical bible-thumper, I recommend this. It's stimulating.

Ugh. That is unsettling at so many different levels. High school kids can be so cruel.

I totally forgot about the topic of this thread in my response. Whoops. Didn't mean to thread-jack. I didn't even mention what I'm currently reading...

I've shifted from my fiction cycle to non-fiction once again. I'm currently reading Anam Cara by John Donohue. Anam Cara means "soul friend"... It's sort of hard to explain what this book is about; sort of a reflection on the spiritual wisdom Celtic mythology.

I'm also audio-reading (gotta love my audiobooks) Eve Ensler's The Good Body. It's fantastic. I love that woman.

Have a couple of poetry books on the go: Ted Hughes, Sylvia Plath and Seamus Heaney.

Just finished Che Guervara (sp?) revolution diaries and motorcycle diaries - v good.

Any recommendations for biogs? autobiogs?

this is so non vegan but i'm reading Julia Child's "My Life in France". Don't even ask why. Her love of meat/butter is disgusting me. Maybe it's good for my diet, because it keeps me from getting hungry (unlike my constant browing on veg web!).

"Hiding My Candy" by The Lady Chablis. And laughing hysterically. Not because it's funny (a lot of it is very serious) but it's the way she tells it! I can hear her voice through the writing.

I also read D is for Dahl, and it was cute.

I'm about 60 pages into it.  I like it so far, but it probably gets better as I get more into it
