I'm reading 'Raising Vegan Children in a Non-vegan World' by Erin Pavlina.
I'm curious what everyone else has their nose in at the moment! :)
The Country Child by Allison Uttley. She's known as a children's author, and it's a Puffin Book, but I wouldn't say it was written for kids. Her prose is rich but the problems her 9 year old child deals with (philosophical mostly, her own thought-life) would probably leave most kids that age cold. They just wouldn't "get" it. It's very different to her other children's books. I get the impression she wrote it for adults and they just put it out as for kids.
I got my kindle copy of Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins (the 3rd and final book of the Hunger Games series) yesterday. It is so good!
I just finished When You Are Engulfed in Flames by David Sedaris. I wanted something funny and I got the idea from mulletjunky (above). While reading it, I was laughing on the train for a change instead of crying. Soon I'll be back to crying, though, because I'm about to start on Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer.
Finishing off The Bell Jar, then heading off to start on the Sookie Stackhouse novels (aka true blood).
I just finished the first one, Dead Until Dawn, it was a fast read for sure, I want to watch the show now. I found the Twilight series to be a little "better" ,so far, but the Sookie Sackhouse ones are a little more adult centered so thats kinda fun. And she isn't all whiney like Bella-(this is just shameful for me to be talking so seriously about these books, but they should be classified as guilty pleasures) I've heard the show is awesome

Just don't expect True Blood, the show, to follow the books. It doesn't but if I told you how it deviates that would be major spooilers. Try to think of the show as a totally different thing because it really is.
I am going back and re-reading my ooold books, because I'm out of new ones and don't have money to buy more right now. Currently rereading Conan Doyle's "The White Company." Trying to ignore the things I know to be impossible (like the tumblers who "hopped about on their stiff necks" while their hands were engaged playing musical instruments! Yeah right!) and just enjoying the humour. Kind of like watching the Errol Flynn "men in tights" movies.
I'm just finishing 'Dragon Weather' by Lawrence Watt-Evans... just a little headier than your basic fantasy stuff. My inner 12-year old was happy.
I'm also starting 'Death Makes A Holiday' by David J. Skal. It's a cultural history of Halloween. And it's awesome so far.
I'm reading the second installent in the Tears of Artamon for the bajillionth time :D And this book called "When Elephants Weep," which is pretty good. It's all about animal emotions and how they express them, and also explores why science refuses to admit animals have feelings and study them. I also just polished off this book about the history of Nanaimo which was cool, The Zero Mile Diet (and I was at the Sustainability fair to see Carole release the book) and an Inconvenient Truth. I've also been leafing through Reader's Digest's Back to the Basics, which I loved when I was 14, because I've always had a dream of homesteading one day. Don't really like the bits on animal agriculture, but we know what to do with that ;) Been so rainy and I just lost my job so I've been housesitting at my dad's while he's on holiday, so I've been reading a lot from his library. As you can tell. :o I also forgot to mention a book on astrology that I just finished a few days ago.
And my next-in-line will be The Fate of the Elephant by Douglas Chadwick. Might have to borow it. The book summary from the jacket seems to be: "Discussing the combination of factors that have pushed the elephant to the brink of extinction why the fate of the elephant is a potent metaphor for our own fate "
I'm reading one of the books Mirrya sent me, Sole Survivor by Dean koontz. Just starting to get really weird!
Trying to read "Middlemarch" by George Eliot again. I like her writing style but I have a hard time liking her characters...even her heroines. Same thing happened when I tried (and failed) to read "The Mill on the Floss." All of her men seem to be either stupid or weak or both, and all of her women are either totally materialistic bitches or to otherworldly for words.
Ms Eliot was apparently not a happy person.
I just finished 'The Road' last week, really enjoyed it but I should have moved on to something light after that! Instead, I'm just starting Stephen King's 'Salem's Lot'. : / Enjoying it so far, but I'm only a handful of pages in...

I was looking on here for book ideas for my bf. He has a kindle so this caught my eye. The description of the Hunger Games sounded interesting so I told him about it and he ended up getting it and then getting the 2nd book, though he didn't like the 2nd one as much. Then I read both books. He's speeding through Mockingjay now and I can't wait to get my hands on it when he's finished. Thanks for the recommendation!

Prep, by Curtis Sittenfeld.

Mostly Good Girls, by Leila Sales. If anyone likes young adult fiction I urge you to check it out!

I finished two books today that are not for class (and as a college student, that's unheard of!! I love to read, wish I had more time...)
1. Riot Grrrl: Revolution Girl Style Now! (awesome book. My friends and are starting up our own zine very soon.)
2. Reinventing Eve: Modern Women in Search of Herself, by Kim Chernin. This book is amazing. Read it.

I've not seen the film but my mother-in-law who I borrowed the book from has seen the film and read the book and I think she felt it was pretty closely adapted. I imagine watching the film would be quite an emotionally draining experience, at least I was able to put the book down and think happy things in between readings!
I finished 'Salem's lot and wasn't particularly stoked with it. I don't know, probably just not really my kind of story. I also felt the end was a bit unsatisfying.
I'm also still working through The China Study, and in the absence of anything else in the house I want to read, I started re-re-re-reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix the other night as well. : )
I just found a free copy of "On the Geneology of Morals" by Nietzsche at the free bookstore here in Baltimore, so I just started that. Phew, it's a heavy one to get through. I don't know if I can finish it this semester, as I have classwork reading to attend to.
I've also been slugging away at "Rendevous with Destiny"--(history of American reform), and "The Metaphysical Club". Both are huge books.
In other news, my November Artforum magazine came in. They have a lengthy article about Marlene Dumas in there. <3 her work.
If you like reading about art, I'd suggest Artforum. It's 75% advertisements for shows opening in New York=quick read!

I've read the book a ton of times, I absolutely love it. Probably my favorite book. There's something beautiful in the chaos and bleakness of the world he paints. The movie was very good, kept close to the book. I have my gripes with it, but that's just me and the discrepancies I have with how it's presented and how I envisioned it in my head. I thought the music didn't fit at all however. It felt like they stuck a romantic comedy soundtrack on a post-apocalyptic film.
And in terms of what I'm reading, right now I'm working my way through The Lord of the Rings on audiobook while I'm at work and reading the book before bed. It's a nice, convenient hybrid way to get through books.
The abridged Penguin version of Boswell's Life of Johnson. I hate abridgements but these days you can't get the full texts outside of a university library. Which I don't have access to. Oh, I can go in and read, but not to take home, they told me, shocked. Eat it here. Just sit right down in one of the carrells and read all 570 pages without a cup of tea, a decent chair, or air.
