Opine on Oprah [and other celebs]

I find Oprah to be a narcissistic, hypocritical woman of very little substance.

Discuss.

What is opine?

I don't really have much opinion about Oprah.

Opine = to express an opinion.

You would know that if you were a participant in Oprah's book club!

Oprah is not amused.

oprah is selfless, generous, consistent and multi-faceted.

Oh shit!

Oprah is wishy washy about every issue there is.  Animal rights especially.  She'll work up a nice set of tears and swear off meat when compassion is trendy, then go push her favorite burger joint.  She feigns commitment and genuineness every time she turns around.  And she turns around a lot.

I think charity should be something humble.  Oprah is no such thing.  Giving is glamorous to her.  She models gluttony and excess on a daily basis in her show and through her lifestyle.

I used to watch her, but not anymore.  I do like many of her segments/interviews/guests, but I do not care for her as a media figure.

Thank you for that in depth opinion on Oprah.

Also, I haven't had television since May 2008.

Oprah is terrible.  She never sticks with anything.  She will do something for a couple weeks then forget about it.  All she does is hop on the bandwagon of whatever compassionate trend is popular at the moment, which is not beneficial to those causes at all.  If she were like Bob Barker and were committed to one cause then it's a different story.  Either Oprah is the most altruistic person in the world, or I'm just too cynical.

This. OK, I live in Europe, but from what I've seen and heard of Miss Winfrey she "really believes" whatever idea is wandering through her head at any given time. Her "convictions" last for about 5 minutes, until the next fad comes around. From the episodes I've seen of her show, she loves bathos and basks in the "approval" of her audience. And of course, she's always plugging some book or product. bottom line is, it's all about the bottom line.

Yes!  The part that is irritating is her absolute "PASSION" for whatever cause it is.  It's one thing to bring light to recent trends, it's another thing to feign commitment to them in the hopes of selling some certain book or product.  Like, everything she commits to is some big life-changing thing, she says.  So life changing that it won't last beyond a couple weeks....

The "Oprah's Favorite Things" episode that happens every year is so hideous.  For someone who belives so strongly in giving of herself, she encourages self-indulgence like no other.  I mean, when you're Oprah, you can afford to be both charitable and self-indulgent, but the average Jane Smith housemom who watches Oprah cannot.  I also despise the armies of Oprah minions who hang on her every word and let her tell them what they should like at the moment.

For someone of such unmatched wealth/power, she should take more care in the messages she communicates to her viewers.  She could do so much better.

What got me was the reaction I got from an Internet group of women whom I have dealt with over the past 7 years or so. Some of them act like Oprah is the Second Coming in person (which is even more suprising in the context of that particular group). I dared give an outsider's view once, and was virulently attacked by people I thought I respected. It was basically "How DARE you!" Of course I dare. I'm an adult, thank you, and I have an opinion, which I did state respectfully.

But then when I remarked to the same group that "reality TV" has very little relationship to reality, I was told off too. Jerry Spriinger is apparently a wonderful person who really cares about the people on his show... ::) ???

See, that's scary.  Hero worship like that.  No one should worship another person so zealously.  Think for yourselves, home-makers of America.

I'm not overly religious, but I think the (Christian) belief that it is not good enough just to do good works and expect to be absolved of everything else is relevant here.  You can't walk around like an ass and then do some charity (or in her case, a lot of charity) and call it a day--you're still an ass.

Hahaaaaaaa.  I do get a kick out of Tyra in a "Wow, look at that train wreck" kind of way.  I like when she dressed up in the fat suit and experienced life as an obese person.

Where did you hear that little tidbit from?  His wife is vegetarian and he is more than supportive of plant-based diets.
