Oprah's going vegan for 21 days!

This is really really exciting.

And it's not just a health thing!  She talks in her journal about it, saying:

"How can you say you're trying to spiritually evolve, without even a thought about what happens to the animals whose lives are sacrificed in the name of gluttony?

Whoa!  Who knows what will come of it, but even the thought of legions of Oprah lovers joining her in a 21 day vegan diet is really thrilling to me.

Wow, if even half of her viewers try this new diet, and imagine if it became a fad and women all over the world gave up meat for a vegan diet for 21 days, imagine the financial catastraphy that would happen to the meat, dairy, and egg industry.  That would be awesome!

I heart Oprah! I hope she makes the change a permanent one....or at LEAST raves about it!

I wonder if a lot of people will think, "Of course Oprah could do this, she has someone cooking her delicious vegan meals."  And in a way, they would be right to think that.  The majority of us do not have someone cooking us strawberry-rhubarb wheat free crepes for breakfast.  It's a lot harder to take on a challenge like this when you're doing all the cooking for yourself.  I don't know how accessible something like this would seem to the general public.  However, I don't want to be completely pessimistic...hopefully it will at least get a lot of people thinking about an animal free diet, and if nothing else, how they can reduce their meat intake and try cooking a few meatless meals a week.

I was thinking the same thing when I learned that Oprah was trying a vegan diet for 21 days. Sounds like she's been toying with the idea a long time. And it is well known that if one can be consistent for at least 21 days, you can make it a habit. I'm new at this time converting myself to a vegan lifestyle and it's not easy. I'm on a budget as well. Like millions of Americans in this tough economy, we can't all afford to eat like Oprah, who has her own personal chef to pick the finest ingredients to serve her. More than likely she will give the vegan community a little of the spotlight as well, but I can't help but imagine there will still remain a poor image or representation from the media when it comes to promoting the vegan lifestyle.

Oprah being who she is, will have to tread very carefully if she is gonna adopt a new vegan lifestyle, so as not to offend any in the animal products industry, I would think she wouldn't become a spokesperson except by demonstration. Does that make sense? I mean maybe privately would be best, because many of her guest may be meat eaters or wearing animal products on her show. But who knows, she managed to get Americans to read more by starting her Oprah's book club.  That's a fact. Oprah has clout. Just the one we in the vegan community need to become a voice for the animals.  ;)b

Oprah's blogging about her 21-day cleanse diet which around here would be called a vegan diet.  It's also a gluten-free diet.

So far her comments have been mostly positive.  The recipes and menus are on the site too.  Here's hoping that she stays on plan!  ;)b

Wow! This Oprah Vegan Challenge is really nice. Now, I have personally seen the benefits of cutting meat out of my diet. I have more energy, I eat healthier, I've been more conscious about what I put in my body, and my overall health has improved immensely. Thanks to this show. It has really bought change in me. :)
