That's really Yuck. It's good that it is being delivered to the masses in very descriptive language. It's still really gross though.
We really do need more articles about the horrors of factory farming in the mainstream press. I know that I send certain articles to certain friends, and they won't even have an open mind and read an article if it shows even the slightest gore.
I am so glad an article like this is being published in a magazine like this. I think a lot of the information on animal cruelity is found in places only other veg*ns know about. This is getting the information out there to people who would not normally know about it. Way to go Rolling Stone!

I saw this a while back & forwarded it to some friends. I was really surprised when my very carnivorous father read the entire article and started complaining to ME about the meat industry. ::) I have a feeling he'll still be eating pork, but at least he's more informed & thinks that there should be more control over these industries.
They should take every Jr. High School Student (say any student over 12) to a factory farm or a slaughter house for a field trip. I know they won't....but if they did.... there would a lot more of us........

That is so gross. The town I live in is actually the birthplace of Hormel, and it employs half the town (not me, though!). I can personally attest to the interesting variety of sounds and smells that come from the plant.
Once I was out running, right after I moved here, and I ran past the side of the plant where a truckload of pigs was being delivered. No joke, they were sqealing and squalling like they could feel their imminent death. You could hear how frantic they were and all their little hooves were scrabbling along the metal floor. It was horrible! Then the truck pulled up and hooked up to the building and I stopped dead in my tracks; I literally couldn't move because I was so horrified. Then you could hear some kind of loud "pop" noises coming from inside of the building and then the pigs were quiet. And then I threw up. Now I don't run by there anymore.
When I was in school they actually did take kids on a tour of the Oscar Meyer plant...by the time I got old enough they had stopped as supposedly the kids found it too upsetting. From the scuttlebutt we heard at school, the kids were curious, interested etc. (they found it gross in a "cool" sort of way) and the teachers were the ones being disturbed by it all! Unfortunate that they didn't stop to ask themselves why it was so disturbing...might have led to some changes which would be unacceptable in one of the pig-producing capitals of the Midwest!

I personaly think that they should have to apply for a meat eating license and every person that wants to eat meat should have to go to a slaughter house once a year , take a tour, and personaly slaughter an animal. I wonder how many meateaters there would be then? Just wondering
