Please sign this petition regarding an abused animal.

This is such a horrible story. The kids involved are so young, but as the animal rescue person I know who forwarded this to me said, if the kids are not taught a lesson, they will think that what they did is not wrong. It can and will let them think that their actions have no consequences.

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/no-leniency-for-5-youth-who-set-fire-to-a-dog

Quote from one of the mom's:
"My son had the gas," she said. "He said he poured the gas on side of the dog and the other boy lit the match."  She said the boys are very sorry.

"They are kids that normally don't set anything or anybody on fire," she said

WTF?!?!?!?  >:(

I mean I don't even know what an appropriate punishment for the kids would be? Any suggestions? Only thing I can think of is that they should spend every single weekend and holiday off from school until they are adults at a local shelter...cleaning up the pee and poop (under strict supervision of course).

I've signed.  This was truly horrifying

This is truly awful.  But I don't understand what the petition is asking for.  Is it for a harsh sentence?  To be tried as adults?

The petition is asking that the kids be shown no leniency.

Dave, this story made my skin crawl.

I just signed too. So sad and creepy. It's always so hard for me to believe that children can be so cruel.

I just can't believe that there are people out there who have no emapathy at all for other living things.  I just imagine myself in that dogs paws, how terrified it must have been, how much pain it was in.  Makes me sick.  I signed the petition stating that the kids should be given community service at and animal shelter and/or at a vet office so that they can learn that animals have feelings too.  And I also said that the parents should be fined for the vet bills of the dog wether it is found or not, $500 to $1000.  Chances are the dog will have to be euthanized if they did find it.  That poor dog.  I am becomming someone who believes capital punishment should be extended to more that just people who do horrible acts to humans, that dog was not in any less pain than if it was a human who had been a victim instead, why should the punishment be any less?

This really makes me sick.

I just reposted it on myspace as well, with further information about how animal abuse in youths lead to violence against people later in life, in SO many cases.  It really needs to be caught at an earlier age, and children MUST learn compassion and sympathy for animals.  For the sake of everyone.

Anyway, I wanted to quotes reports on the issue, and my research brought me to even worse stories of abuse.  Its f_cking disgusting.  I feel like crying.

People, PLEASE sign this!  It only takes a second, and pass it on!!!

Signed.  So sad.  Dave, do you know if this was a stray dog or a family companion?  Not that it matters, I just wondered. If this dog lived with a family, I was curious what their reaction was.

I have to think it was a pet because they held him by the collar.  Of course, strays can be wearing collars too.  God help anyone who hurts one of my pets.

I find the quote so horrific I am afraid to click the link to sign it. I want to though. I have two thoughts. One, is that the youth should be given some serious therapy. Their families may need therapy too. I do not believe soumething so violent is a normal part of development and i think its best to have them figure out why they did that before they are committing more crimes on humans and non humans alike...My second thought, more of  a concern really is that if the boys are given "grunt work" with animals (such as cleaning up excrement from cages int eh local shelter) they may grow to resent animals even more....I'm trying tot think of an option that would both benefit the animals kingdom and teach the boys compassion for animals. I don't think they should get off the hook lightly...is there a possibility that they can serve time in juvenile detention center on weekends? Or would that screw them up more?

Signed!  9-14 years-- that's definitley old enough to know that what they were doing would caused tremendous horror and pain to any flesh and bone creature!!   I hope they hold each parent responsible for their minor child's actions, too!   They, obviously, have failed at instilling compassion and empathy-- something those children should have learned at a much younger age than now!!
