"Sea Kittens"

PETA decides to refer to fish as "sea kittens."
Ignorant comments from fisheries and the general population ensue.

Yes, one board I post on occasionally had a huge defaming of PETA due to that site.  I think its slightly cute, hugely satirical and something people do not think of.

Their main comments? The 'book' was "creepy".  I read though the Fish Stories and found it to be not creepy but reality that people do not want to know.

I find the sea kitten campaign pretty stupid, actually.

But, uh, if fish in fursuits is your thing...

Oh, PETA. They need a big drink of reality juice. They're an organisation that has the potential to reach so many people, but they actually seem to enjoy shooting themselves in the foot.

My favourite bit was, "It seems like it's discouraging Americans to buy our product, which I think is unpatriotic." Heh.

Gah!

You beat my post in chit-chat by 2 minutes!

I bow to your superior board-fu.

i just read about this and was laughing through alot of it.. that unpatriotic bullshit totally irritates the HELL out of me.. i guess you can't love america if you don't support a business that makes money off killing animals.

alot of people don't support the ideas of the porn industry but it IS a money making industry that would result in the loss of jobs if everyone stopped supporting it.. is it unpatriotic to not support them??

the cartoon of the fish in the kitten costume is funny though.  maybe i'll be a sea kitten for halloween..

peta and sea kittens are both ridiculous and make me laugh.

vegweb should change all the "faux fish" recipes to things like "faux sea kitten fillets"

The "design your own sea kitten" thing was cute, and my daughter liked it. The stories WERE creepy. I quit reading them outloud to her. Not suitable for a three-year old, I think. Peta makes me laugh, but I appreciate them, those sillies.

I  totally made a sea kitten though. :)

I'm so confused.

This is incredibly lame and ineffective, in my opinion.  Fish in no way resemble kittens.  If it were some kind of sea mammal, I'd get it.  Maybe.

How about just educating people about fish?  Like, these are fish, this is what happens when we catch them, this is why it might not be a good idea.  I'd feel anyone who was trying to pass a fish off as a kitten was insulting my intelligence.  Enough appeals to cutesy-ness.  ::)

I think sea kittens is a bad idea. It confused me almost as much as trying to figure out sea cows.

I remember being in elementary school and reading about the Rainbow fish (with ths shiny scales....remember?) and then not wanting to eat the Rainbow fish. Fish can be cute.

Thank you!! I completely agree.  I think we need to merge the Chit Chat and News and Debate "Sea Kitten" threads.

Over here in Europe PETA is just another political pressure group. It's all about the funding. Where does the money go is not so clear. You see a few posters at the beginning of the winter, but very little info about what they actually DO with the money people donate.
They are totally out of touch with real people and how they think, IMHO.

Peta gets way too 'guerilla' I completely agree-- this approach gets lots of attention (which is apparently all they seek) but usually pisses more people off than turning them on to veganism or vegetarianism..... too bad

stephen colbert talked about this on the colbert report.  i think it was the show on the 15th.  it ended up with him talking about starting to eat land fishes (kittens)  haha.  made me laugh.

I'm in England so we have a similar situation. I actually know a girl who did an internship with them in America which I find odd. She's such a sweet thing and yet she worked for such an aggressive organisation. I'm with you on the point that they're out of touch, it's a little weird. The only part that I'm really into is their PETA2 section which has a lot of bands doing interviews on why they're vegan or vegetarian.

Comparing mammal pets to fish has no point and just makes us veg*ns look like a bunch of wackos.....way to go PETA for taking more away from the veggie movement than contributing to it by these silly acts ...boo :(

Yeah, one of my (average, normal, non-militant omni) facebook friends was making fun of this Sea Kittens business in her status.  Just goes to show.  It's a huge joke.
