soo... got an "ugly" friend?

apparently, they're the new hot commodity.

this pretty much makes me sick.

That's terrible.  If I could purchase their product, I wouldn't.

yeah, it is just ridiculous that someone 1.) had that idea 2.) people thought it was good 3.) those people agreed to pose for it? 4.) NO ONE that was reviewing it was like: "wait, this isn't ok..."

it makes me really really sad.

awful eh? a couple of my friends mentioned this on our radio show today (they were discussing TO Pride and how corporate involvement can suck.) Bacardi is usually one of the more prominent sponsors, but like so many of the other sponsors, they don't really do anything to improve queers' quality of life or support our rights, other than paying so that Pride can happen. But they sell so much booze at the concerts and stuff that it probably evens out.

seriously though, that ad is ridiculous! I can't even believe it's for real.

What the fuck?

I'm imagining a corporate ladder structure where things like this get approved in front of a bunch of yes men, or at conference calls, but I still can't figure out how something as foul as this could get by.  Unbelievable.

I don't think it's meant to be taken seriously. It's just a joke making fun of superficial people who would actually think like that

hmm... i could see this sort of thing being done for men too. i don't know if the "accessorize with an ugly friend" thing is in itself sexist (the fact that the ad campaign was only used for women was sexist, but then again the product is targeted at women), but it is mean :/

fauna, I've never heard of the "ugly friend" stereotype applied to men. The media doesn't really emphasize men's looks as much as it does for women.

well, i think in general it's true that the various media focus more on women's looks than men's, but I don't know if the idea of "bring an ugly friend with you so you look more attractive" is something that's necessarily limited to women. I could see guys trying to do that...

I didn't know there was an "'ugly friend' stereotype" at all. Maybe that means i AM the ugly friend (oh no!). Nah. I tend to hang out with dudes... I guess that makes me the butch friend.
