Swinging Chicken Ritual Divides Orthodox Jews
Orthodox Jews swing chickens over their heads and then have them slaughtered in the days before Yom Kippur.
One year, Schloss found a garage full of chickens that had been abandoned after Yom Kippur. "They were emaciated chickens mixed in with dead chickens," he recalls. "There was no food, there was no water — it was hot during the day, cold at night. There was rain. It was just a torturous thing for these animals to go through."
