Vegetarian Times and other Veg Magazines

Who all here susbscribes to Vegetarian Times? I thought it might be fun for us to discuss the magazine here, such as the features and the recipes - what we've had good luck with, what sucks, etc. Also, what other vegetarian magazines are recommended?

I just recently started subscribing to VT and I've enjoyed it a lot. They usually have good and interesting articles, though the newest issue (September) was a little dull. Maybe because it was a one-month issue so they didn't try as hard? ;) I think my favorite article of the issues I have so far was the one about foraging. I wish those wild greens grew near me, or at least, that I was good enough to spot them - knowing my luck, I'd get the poisonous ones by mistake and make a fatal salad, hee. And the picture of Mr. Forager was a keeper; he looks like my uncle, who is actually into that kind of stuff (not as much as the guy featured, but he's into a little wild foraging and such).

But I did like the article about spices in the September issue. I made the vegan snickerdoodles today and they came out fabulously. Didn't derive from the recipe at all, except that I used whole wheat flour and added some ground cloves as well as allspice to the cinnamon-sugar mixture. I only got about 26 cookies (as opposed to 45, as the recipe said) but I've never been good at measuring out my cookies, and besides, 45 is a little much, even when sharing with the neighbors.

I also made the Chicago Diner burgers from the July/August issue and those were really good, and the only burgers in that feature for which I had all the ingredients on-hand. The mushroom-tempeh burgers look and sound good but I'd have to buy a lot of stuff. Maybe when I've got some extra money! I do like, though, that there is an even mix between recipes that require lots of expensive or uncommon ingredients, but then half that feature ingredients that are most likely in the house already.

Up next is the mushroom ravioli with green pea puree (September issue), which looks delicious. I'll report on them later.

Wow, all those recipes sound absolutely delicious! I've recently started subscribing to that very magazine myself and can't wait until I get my first issue. I've yet to receive it, though - apparently it takes months and months for the magazine to make it all the way here to Europe!  :(

i just recently subscribed to vegnews.  i prefer vegnews over vegetarian times.  VT had too many recipes that had dairy.  overall, i found vegnews more interesting.  but thats just my opinion of course.

even as a LO veggie, i too, was sick of all the dairy/egg recipes in VT....though alot of them sound realy good! and the mag is full of em!
its at least inspiring, and i am usually am trying to veganize recipes that i see, so its no different.

i do like how they use a seasonal ingredient as a main component for a bunch of recipes....and like i said, it is inspiring ... beautiful pics of yummy food.

I use to have VT, but didn't renew for the same reasons others have cited...too much dairy/egg. I don't want to pay for something I have to veganize.
I really like VegNews and will be renewing that one!!! :)

I don't subscribe to either and used to buy VT's a lot.  Then I discovered VegNews.  I much prefer it.  I really should subscribe because nearly everyone carries VT's but very few carry VegNews.

That's what made me subscribe. I'm sure we spent more gas running around trying to find it than a subscription costs.  :D

I like VegNews too!  :D
I wish it came out more often though :(
but since it doesn't it is kind of like a treat when it comes in the mail.
I LOVE the travel articles! They have been very practical for us!
Even the ads are interesting since we don't get a chance to see all the vegan products on the market it's a chance to see them and say, "Hey, they make a vegan such and such!"
I got a vegnews tote bag with my subscription. That was cool :)

I just discovered VegNews also! I got the summer issue, and enjoyed it - but haven't tried any of the recipes. If anyone does try them out, let me know how they are!

I don't know if you've read any of my posts about journalism, but as I mentioned before, I'm hoping to get a summer internship with VegNews. Wouldn't that be amazing? San Fransisco here I come! (I hope)

I subscribe to both of them and I really don't have a preference.  I tend to cook more things from VT but I like the articles in vegnews.  I use to subscribe to veggie life but they stopped printing it, I even had some issues left on  my subscription but I missed the cutoff for getting my money back (which was like a year ago)  Did that happen to anyone else?  I was really pisses.  Anyways I love subscribing to cooking magazines.  I also get Gourmet for inspiration and the beautiful pictures but I have never cooked anything from that magazine.
