Garbanzo Tacos

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

    2 can garbanzo beans
    1 packet vegan taco seasoning
    lettuce
lard-free tortillas or hard taco shells
    tomatoes
    onions
    salsa
any other items you like on your taco

Directions:

Dump both cans of beans into a skillet (but use the liquid from only one can). Dump in the taco seasoning. Stir and let simmer for about 10-15 minutes. Add beans and other ingredients to your tacos, burritos, and/or taco salads.

Especially good recipe for those who aren't crazy about the flavor of garbanzo beans. The seasoning takes over.

Serves: 6.

Preparation time: 15 min.

Cool recipe.  If you are like me and prepare meals for the week in advance, you can make a garbanzo/taco seasoning paste that can be heated and put into this taco recipe, made into a wrap, spread on vegan crackers.  Try adding spicy salsa until you get a consistency/heat that you like.

I haven't tried it yet, but it sounds delicious.  I used veggie burger mix in a taco last night, and it was OK but really didn't go with the taco seasoning -- or the sauce, which I love.  I'm gonna try the GREAT GARBANZOS.  Thanks for the idea.

Very good and very simple. What else can I say?

Beware the taco seasoning mixes.  I've found most of them have whey and sometimes meat products in them.  Otherwise, this looks great.  I'm trying it tonight!

This recipe was great!

These are awesome!!! One of the foods I still crave are tacos, and this recipe tastes exactly like regular tacos, its spooky! I just cooked the beans in hot seasoning mix, filled my hard taco shells, sprinkled on a little cheese and they were awesome. My meat eating husband loved them too!

Purely for the sake of commenting, not using the liquid from canned beans helps reduce the tendency for gas.  Same thing goes for the soak water of dried beans/legumes.  I 86d seasoning packets a couple years ago becuase of the unpronouncables in the ingredients, makes me nervous.  Cummin, chili powder, and oregano make great basic spices for mexican-type cooking.  Red pepper flakes can kick it up a notch as well.  Will have to try this recipe once I have garbanzos in my pantry.  Looks like it will be tasty.

I make this all the time and just love it. Very easy and tastes so good. Thanks for posting it.  maryann

That any brand of taco seasoning is a little misleading (I know someone already brought this up). Most seasonings that I've looked at have sugar, BHT, or some animal product. I found one generic (Shaws) kind that was really good but I think that is just a local chain *?*

My girlfriend and I made these for dinner last night.  We really enjoyed this recipe for Garbanzo Tacos.  A+++ very tasty.

My boyfriend and I had chickpea tacos last week, and we found that the chickpeas won't roll everywhere if you give them a couple of mashes with a fork. Its not to turn them into hummus or anything, but just so they lose some of their round edges.

Dina brought up concerns about whey in taco seasoning mixes.  Here is a recipe I found elsewhere for homemade taco mix.  2 T Chili Powder 2 T Flour 2 t Cumin 2 t Oregano 1/2 t Onion Powder 1/2 t Garlic Powder 1/2 t Cayenne Pepper Combine all ingredients in a zip lock bag and shake until completely mixed. Add to the food base (in this case the garbanzos) along with 1/2-3/4 cup water and cook until reduced to desired consistency.  Yield: 5 Servings This is a sodium free recipe.  Add salt as you wish, but its always better to add a little at a time.  Once its in there, you can't subtract it.

I tried making this but failed. I didn't use the water from the beans in the can (i used one can only) and didn't know how much seasoning to put in since i have a large plastic container instead of a bag. I will try again. How many tablespoons of seasoning would you suggest? Would you suggest frying the salsa in it?

stride4unity, a packet is about 4 tbsp.

This deceptively simple recipe is surprisingly delish! If you are bypassing this recipe thinking what is the big deal, chick peas and packet seasoning, try it!  There are a lot of natural taco seasoning packets out there folks.  Just check out your natural food stores.  I  mashed half my garbanzos though. Much better smooshy so they can spread into your taco better.  After smooshing, I added peas and corn. It complimented it wonderfully. I then spread corn tortillas with a bit of oil filled them and then baked until crisp. They were a big hit here!  It was super easy to make so if you use those fake taco shells, then it will be a super quick meal.  I think this is something your non-veggie friends and family may like also.

This sounds like a very good recipe and I will try it because I loce garbanzo beans, but why not just use Soy burger? MorningStarFarms makes a great Soy Burger product that would work very well with this recipe.

why not try something different?  Maybe someone is allergic to soy. Or maybe they don't like the fake meats. Maybe one is trying to stay away from the processed foods.  Personally, I liked the garbanzo beans better and since the beans are healthier, I will do this more often.

Archived comment by: idcgirl
LauraLEE: this is a wonderful filling for tacos because beans are superior to processed foods and are a daily staple for a healthy vegetarian diet. Also, Morningstar Farms and Kellogs products contain animal by-products and genetically modified organisms. Gross! ;o) Garbanzo Tacos = YUM!!

Hains and Bearitos make organic taco mixes.  some grocery stores might carry them, but almost all whole foods and organic stores will have them.  they have OG spices and extractives.  they're yummy and make all sorts of other mixes, not all are vegan (like the ranch dip) so be sure to check ingredients on the label.

3/18/05 - I put 5 stars for this.  Very tasty and I added chopped olives to my chick pea filling. I think I like this filling better than any soy meat filling I have tried.

Archived comment by: pandorra
This time I made it correctly and this recipe is definitely a 5 stars. This reminded me of the exact taste of meat tacos (back in the day when i ate meat, before i became a veggie). Forget the meat! Just use chickpeas and taco seasoning and you have the same taste. I used tomatoes, salsa, vegan cheese, olives, and lettuce. Delicious!

Archived comment by: stride4unity
Excellent!  I  mashed the beans a little with a fork, put them in the pan, added a little water and olive oil, and then poured in the seasoning packet.  Worked great!  Even my dad who is a heavy meat eater ate a ton of this!

Made this just today and turned out awesome!  I made it for a taco salad.  I found taco seasoning that had no animal by products in it.  Surprisely Taco Bell Seasoning individual package mix.  I researched all the ingredients and all good!

Tasty, easy, cheap, fast and filling. What more could one ask for in a recipe? I used cumin, oregano, red pepper, garlic and onion powder instead of taco seasoning (All the ones I found had animal products. Even the natural ones had whey! ;__; ) and it turned out fantastic. I never would've thought to use garbanzo beans as taco filling, but it's fantastic!

Super! I must admit I went into this predisposed to be underwhelmed but they were delish! Even DH likes the filling, tho eating tacos isn't really his thing. He just eats it with a fork.

I agree...these were awesome.  I used one can of garbanzo beans, a can of black beans, some onion and yellow pepper.  I had them in a tortilla with spinach and cheese.  These were so easy and cheap, but tasted really good.  Thanks!

Good and easy!  We'll make it again! Following others' reviews, I also mashed the garbanzos just a bit.  I used Krogers (store) brand reduced sodium taco seasoning - out of all the brands that one surprisingly had the least amount of ingredients (and all appear to be vegan).  Thanks for the recipe, I'd never think of things like this!

I had to register to this site just so I could compliment this recipe. I eat these at least once a week. They are super! Sometimes I put the leftovers in the blender with a little onion, chile, and pepper and it makes a good sandwich/pita/cracker spread. Whoever thought of this is a genius.

Delicious tacos!  This is a wonderful alternative to tacos with soy meat.  The dish is super simple to make.  I suggest checking sodium content on the taco mixes.  I found one that was vegan, but it turned out a little on the salty side.  Next time, I'll look for a low-sodium taco mix or just make my own.  In addition to shredded salad mix, tomatoes, and onions, I also added taco sauce and Tofutti sour cream.

I made these garbanzo tacos for my husband and I tonight. I used diced tomatoes, Tofutti sour cream, shredded Nacho flavoured Follow Your Heart brand vegan cheese, and bottled taco sauce. He had soft tacos and I had hard shells. They were both delicious. We were really surprised at how great they tasted. My husband said they were even better than soy crumble tacos.

Recently became veggie, tried this for lunch today and it was great! I have a 1 year old and she liked eating the messy garbanzo beans with her hands. The taco seasoning that I've been using for a while now (including pre-veg) is an organic vegetarian mix, the brand is called "Simply Organic"... it's pretty good. Thanks for a great lunch!
