Chunky Monkey Milkshake

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

    1 cup soy milk
    1 banana
1 tablespoon sweetened chocolate powder (I use Gheridelli Sweet Ground Chocolate. It is labeled parve which means that it does not have dairy or meat products.)
    2 tablespoons roasted cashews

Directions:

Serves: 1.

Preperation time: 5 min.

Pour milk into blender. Add rest of ingredients. Blend. Drink. Enjoy.

A chunky monkey is a spunky monkey!  I like to drink things right out of the blender, or was it the toilet?  I can't remember.

A chunky monkey is also a Ben And Jerrys ice cream flavor, but who cares?

Uh, how could chocolate not have dairy in it?

Chocolate itself doesn't have milk in it. Prepared chocolate products like milk chocolate have milk in it. Dark chocolate and most baking chocolates and powders do not have any dairy in them unless the label says it is milk chocolate.  Also, contrary to popular belief, cocoa butter is NOT dairy.  It is derived from the cocoa plant, just like chocolate.

Parve means Kosher. It just means that it does not mix milk or meat. Lots of kosher items contain fish geletain though, instead of the meant and what not. Dont confuse that labeling for meaning completely vegan.

Nope, parve means contains no dairy and no animal products, meaning that someone in the Jewish faith could combine it with either meat OR milk without violating any food guidelines. Kosher products must be labeled either kosher meat, kosher dairy, or parve, which is neither. Kosher gelatin is mostly fish gelatin-- fish falls under the dairy category, meaning it can be combined with other dairy products, but not meat. Howe'ver, there are some kosher gelatins which are plant derived, although I don't understand why they would still label them as gelatin. As for me, I don't take chances with anything labeled gelatin.

to add to the parve conversation... sharway is partialy right.  It means no meat or dairy in it.  Howe'ver, fish and eggs are considered neither meat nor dairy and can be included in parve products.  I believe fish/ fish products can be included in a meat meal according to kosher law (not that that is relevant for us veggies wither way).  Always check ingredients although the non-veg ingredient I most often see that spoils the otherwise parve products for me is more often egg, egg albumin, etc. than fish.  But it is a good idea to check for that fish gelatin, too, although it is usually impossible to tell whether it is plant or fish based without inquiring from the company.

back to the actual recipe ingredients though...  the chocolate chips obviously (or maybe not obviously to the cautious) do not contain any fish or eggs in them!

sorry to digress again but its kind of true that fish is in the milk category as it can not be combined with meat so if a product has fish in it it will say fish next to the kosher symbol, the only thing that must be checked for is eggs so if something says pareve, check for eggs

Chocolate comes from the cocoa plant and dairy comes from a cow.  The only way chocolate will have dairy in it is if it is added that way for the final sale product and then it would have to include the dairy on the ingredients list.  I eat dairy free dark chocolate often.  It is delicious!
