This to me was BETTER than real BBQ! We put it on kaiser rolls and put a slice of dill pickle on top. It was quick, easy and delicious!

What is textured soy protein?

Archived comment by: g.
textured soy protein is Textured Vegetable Protein, can be found in most health food stores and is a dry light-weight stuff that looks kinda like dog food.  It is reconstituted with an equal amount of hot water.  You can get textured soy protein that is beef style which is dark brown and looks sort of like hamburger once it is reconstituted, or you can get an unseasoned variety also so that you can put your own seasonings in.  The textured soy protein looks bad when dry, but it does taste good and has a good texture when it has been reconstituted and has other stuff added to it.  ENJOY!

I tried this for lunch today and it was very good!  Thanks for the recipe!

Very good, my whole family loved it.  Even meat-eating hubby. Will be a stand-by in this house now.. Thanks

This recipe is the bomb! My boyfriend and I love textured soy protein and all that it stands for. These sandwiches really come through when you're hungry for something really heavy & meaty. The addition of chopped jalapeno peppers mixed in with the textured soy protein, Monterey Jack tofu cheese, and Sandwich Stackers pickles improves the flavor ten-fold. Long live textured soy protein! Thank you for the excellent recipe!

I used a combination of Chinese Rib sauce ad a bottled honey/mustard sauce. Allow the flavors to mix together in the fridge for a few hours. Its AMAZING!  Shelley

I posted this recipe originally to the fat-free mailing list.  I don't know who posted it here, but I'm glad everyone likes it.  Lately I've used a mustard-based barbeque sauce instead of the regular kind, and its been a big hit.

I was looking for something quick and easy for dinner--and this was it.  Very good, liked by the whole family--and I had everything on hand/

I tried this recipe using Shelleys suggestion and it was outstanding.  My 3-yr old and 7-yr old loved it too!

How many people does this serve? I guess I'll find out tonight when I make it, I just wish I knew how many rolls to buy...

Since my allergic, I can not eat soy in any food. So, I was wondering if textured soy protein had soy in it? This sandwich looks really great, and I hope I can try it. Thanks!

I've been making this for about a year now and it is THE best meat substitute:  TASTES better than real BBQ beef or pork (even fooled the hog farmers wife I work with) CHEAPER than meat FASTER than boiling the meat.  One change, though. I find textured soy protein keeps a better texture if you don't soak it in water first. I always soak in either worsteshire or soy sauce mixed with a little vinegar (the acid does something to make it retain a stronger texture) or else I just stir it right into the sauce. I mix it, as above, if I'm making a fake (really good) non-meat loaf, but if I'm putting it into something tomato based, I just throw it right into the sauce and I think it tastes best this way.  Also, there are a few shapes of textured soy protein I've found --I use teh little rice-crispy shaped ones in spaghetti and sloppy joes and non-meat loaf, the bigger stringy ones in BBQ sandwiches, and i stay away from the chunks. I haven't found anything good to do with them... If you have, though, let me know!  Great board, by the way!  Thanks!!

Is textured soy protein hydrogenated?  I don't want to eat anything that is similar to margarine.  I don't need anything clogging my arteries.  I already have hereditary high cholestrol.

Archived comment by: alisa
textured soy protein (Textured Vegetable Protein) is produced from soy flour after the oil has been extracted, then compressed.  It is most commonly found in dehydrated, granular form.  It has no cholestorol, contains nothing hydrogenized, and is very low in fat.

vegan Worcestershire sauce.  Ingredients (use vegan versions): Vinegar, Molasses, High Fructose Corn Syrup, ANCHOVIES, Water, Hydrolyzed Soy and cornprotien, Onions, Tamarinds, Salt, Garlic, Cloves, Chili Peppers, Natural Flavorings and Shallots.  That is the ingredients for a basic Worcestershire  Sauce. Note ANCHOVIES, Thats why I cannot use it in anything. (Vegan Diet) Also I find even Low Sodium Soy has to much sodium for me :|

I'm eating this for lunch right now, and its pretty tasty!  I halved the recipe because I'm cooking just for myself, and it made enough to serve about two people.  Good stuff.

Corrwind: annies naturals makes a vegan worchestershire sauce that can be bought in health food stores- its anchovy free.

Wow!  This is sooo good!  This is my first time cooking with soy protein and it definitly won't be my last!  It was so easy to work with, cheap, and delicious!  Thanks for the recipe.

These were great.  The kids loved them and it took no time at all.  We even took them to the park for lunch the next day.  I let a friend try and she couldnt believe it wasn't meat.

I'm so peeved, this recipe looks great, but the soy protein which I used to buy has changed recipes and now contains milk products Sad grr. I really want to try this!!

Randomlyred, Depending on where you live some Hispanic grocery stores will carry tvp(Textured Vegetable Protein) Or simply go to any health food store ie. Whole foods, Mothers Market Henrys or a Wild Oats market. But sometimesits best to check your local area natural food stores, maybe call 411 in your city for listings Good luck hopefully you'll get to try this recipe.

Archived comment by: uAJ
If you get the tvp in bulk, it is even cheaper than pre-packaged. Here is a vegan worcestershire! http://store.foodfightgrocery.com/vewosa.html There is also a recipe for it in either Garden of Vegan or How it All Vegan.  and one from this site (haven't tried it) http://vegweb.com/recipes/misc/sauce-worch1.shtml And a note: worcestershire is not even vegetarian, much less vegan, because of the fish. I am sure no matter which one you choose that it will last a long time. The regular kind does.
