Tofu BaconIngredients (use vegan versions): Firm Tofu
Soy Sauce (or Tamari)
Salt & Pepper if desired
Directions:Preparation time: 30 Minutes.
This is a wonderful bacon substitute that is very simple. This works best on sandwiches.
Slice a cake of tofu in long strips that are about 1/4 inch thick. Fry them in a little oil, slowly, until they are golden. Next, douse a couple of tablespoons of soy sauce into the pan. Make sure your heat isn't too high and just let them cook until they are crispy and firm, turning them occasionly. They need to cook a while so your tofu isn't mushy. Makes wonderful B.L.Teases!
I make mine the same but with 2 tbs of soy sauce and 1/2 teaspoon of
liquid smoke. It tastes EXACTLY like bacon!

When I made this, the tofu stuck to the pan. Any suggestions?

to keep tofu from sticking, i use a non-stick teflon pan- the tofu *never* sticks and I can use a minimum amount of oil. Using
liquid smoke and, after it is done but still in the pan, sprinkling with enough
nutritional yeast to coat evenly gives it a *great* flavor. Makes excellent fajitas!

In addition to the
liquid smoke, I coat each piece with
nutritional yeast. It does taste a lot like bacon.

It is a compliment for my vegan salad with vegan salad dressing.

My family still can not believe they were eating tofu and that it tasted like bacon! I agree with the above comments... use plenty of
liquid smoke and
nutritional yeast (its loaded with B vitamins). I use a product called Braggs Liquid Aminos (at Health Food Stores) in place of soy sauce (it is also soy derived). Sodium is naturally occuring. I also do not add salt & pepper. Meatless is not the only important thing! Also aggressively get rid of sodium where you can. I read a GREAT eye opening book about health... Gods Guide to Ultimate Health by Dr. George Malkmus... every Veggie should read it.

Thanks!! Tastes great-for those trying make sure tofu is drained well and slice thin for frying! what a great alternative to bacon without the bad fat or preservatives that fake bacon has! I'm going to try adding this to a spinach salad with hot bacon dressing -yummy!

Very nice. My children thought that it was meat! Is terrific on sandwiches with salad for a simple lunch.

I tried this recipe and the Tofu stayed soft. I'm new at this, what did I do wrong?

Zipit, you might not be cutting your tofu strips thin enough. Try for smaller than 1/4 inch if possible. Keep frying them longer until they actually turn golden or brown. If you want your bacon REALLY fried and crispy, you may even line the pan with more oil, and turn the heat up to medium high. After the oil is hot drop the tofu in, but keep an eye on it because it wil be cooked very fast (a deep golden colour is deep-fried)

Help! I tried making bacon and it got all black, disinigrated and made smoke alarm go off! I'm new at being a vegan and I really need help.

After making this, I can say that it is quite tasty. I might omit the syrup next time because it produced a bad smell. (I did not use any vegan ingredients) It is fairly convincing, and can easily be taken as meat

The folks who ar having trouble may be using the wrong kind of tofu. Us the extra firm kind that comes in tubs and the tofu is like a sponge floating in water. Freeze it first then thaw and squeeze out the water. The other kind, that is not for this type of recipe, comes in foil-lined boxes that look a bit like a juice-box, and that kind of tofu is like a chunk of solidly cooked eggwhies. That kind is for sauces and such. Toni

Too plain as is. It needed
liquid smoke and just a smidgen of
maple syrup for the sweet tang. Nutritional yeast didn't hurt either.

someone said he also uses
liquid smoke on this, can i ask what this stuff is? i never saw it here in italy, and i don't know where to find it.

The basic formula was great! I used ground pepper to get that pepper corn bacon feel/taste. I didn't feel like it was missing a thing, I did not want to over do it! But I did buy some
liquid smoke and can't wait to try it. ****For UK veggies: One thing I do miss is HP sauce, I finaly found some at Cost Plus in the US, so added a touch of HP sauce to the fake bacon... it tasted like one of Mums old fry ups! Yeah!

This really does taste a lot like bacon but the soy sauce blackens the tofu, making the tofu look like charcoal. Other than the appearance difference this is an excellent recipe for mock bacon.

This recipe is AMAZING! It really does taste just like bacon. I love it! The
nutritional yeast IS a must! Thank you! Oh and my tofu only ever stuck to the pan when I didn't press it for long enough- always press the tofu for 30-45 minutes before using it in this recipe.
