Garbanzo Bean Burgers

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

    2 cup cooked garbanzo beans (chickpeas), mashed
    1 stalk celery, finely chopped
    1 carrot, finely chopped
    1/4 small onion, minced
    1/4 cup whole wheat flour
    Salt (optional) and pepper to taste
    2 tablespoon oil

Directions:

Mix the ingredients (except oil) in a bowl.  form 6 flat patties.  Fry in oiled pan over medium-high heat until burgers are golden brown on each side.  Makes 6 burgers.

This is a most excellent recipe!  The garbanzo beans have so much moisture in them that nothing else is needed to hold them together.  They brown up so nicely!  It made my husband very happy as he cannot have soy products or certain veggies & most frozen veggie burgers have soy.  Thanks again!

This sounds great, almost like falafal.  I was wondering if they could be baked in the oven and or made into meat balls for spaghetti (how would they do sitting in sauce)?

Delicious! and so easy to make.  One caveat: the mix was a little dry, so I (a non-vegan, admittedly) added an egg to hold it together, but I'm sure a vegan equivalent could be found.  Water, perhaps?  This recipe is a keeper.

I had just read this same recipe in a pamphlet from The Vegetarian Resource Group. I wasn't sure whether to try it or not. Then I read it again here and all the positive comments about it. I made it last night and they were yummy. Thanks.

I made them last night and my husband tried it and loved it. Normally he scoffs at food like this but kept raving about how good it was.  I added some cayenne pepper to the mix which gave it a little extra kick.

I made these a few weeks ago, and I don't know if maybe it was the canned chickpeas I used or what, but my family didn't like them much and they had a kind of funky taste.

These were good.  I had a hard time frying them.  The first batch stuck to the pan so I baked the rest of them in the oven on the broil setting.  The kids liked them.  We all agreed that we probably wouldn't like them on a bun but we liked them dipped in barbeque sauce.  I think they would also be good with some gravy on top.

These were pretty tasty and simple.  I added some homemade celery salt, (celtic sea salt and celery seeds ground with a mortar and pestle), a dash of cayenne and some garlic powder. They were sort of delicate but they stayed together for me. I think they wouldn't stand up in a sauce. I ate them on a kaiser bun with vegenaise and organic dijon and romaine. Oh yeah, dill pickles too. I also grated the carrot and added ground sunflower seeds instead of whole wheat flour, making them gluten free. I think oats would work well in it too. Next time I may sautee the onions first with a bit of garlic. Yes, then they will be just right. Guacamole would really compliment these burgers.

These were delicious!  They are so versatile, too.  I made them with about 1/2 a teaspoon each of ground coriander and cumin and left out the carrots.  They would be good with various different spices and/or toppings.  I might add a squeeze of lemon juice next time and maybe have it with Trader Joe's Indian Relish.

These were great! My only changes were to use green onions instead of white onion, and I also added a garbanzo "egg" (1 tbs garbanzo flour mixed with 1 tbs water) because the mixture seemed too crumbly. This helped it stick together better. I served these in pita pockets stuffed with tabouli, along with some maple glazed baby carrots and steamed snow peas. So easy, so delicious - thanks!!

I added about a 1/4 of a bell pepper finely diced and 1/2 teaspoon each of cumin, coriander and cayenne  pepper and they were yummy! Next time I will add a clove of garlic finely chopped, YUM!

I enjoyed this as a pita sandwich with lettuce. The only change I made was  to add a pinch of cayenne and a tablespoon of fresh rosemary. I did not find the mixture dry at all. The burgers were fragile, but held together. I cooked them in a nonstick pan, so no problem there. Very simple. A keeper. I'm looking forward to trying them with the additions mentioned by other reviewers.

I made these again and they are lovely. This time, I sauteed  the onions (more than it calls for) and a clove of minced garlic. I spiced it with cumin and paprika as well as s&p to taste. I grated the carrot and diced the other veggies small. Like last time, instead of whole wheat flour I used ground sunflower seeds. Now that I am wheat free, I wrapped a burger in lettuce with fixin's and it sure was tasty!

Well, this seems like something that could be much better than this first time. It was pretty good though..I probably didn't chop my vegs up enough (carrot, onion, and mushroom), and didn't add enough seasoning (s, p, cayenne,and garlic powder). The patties stayed together pretty well for cooking..but I mistakingly piled them up on paper towel to drain..so they crumbled. I might try it again though! : )

My first batch of these ended up being fried bean pate lumps. Lol. I think it's because my mixture is a bit moist.  They kept on falling apart so I added tons of wheat flour to the second batch. That improved it somewhat but not much. They're pretty good slathered with vegan chicken gravy.
