I really miss yogurt, so I'll try this for sure!! Yogurt was one of my favorite foods until I became a vegetarian!! I've never looked at an ingredient list on a container of yogurt, and I don't have much opportunity to now!! All I know is that its not for veggetarians!! What is it in yogurt that isn't vegetarian?(I'm not a vegan)
Archived comment by: kirsten
In some brands of yogurt there's gelatin (cow cartilage, basically). Some don't have that. But! If you are vegetarian because you don't want to kill animals for food, you should know that male calves from the dairy industry are made into veal. This is because a male calf has little use on a dairy farm. The female calves are kept for milk (ewww).

Does anyone know if Nasoya silken tofu would make the texture/taste different? Is there a difference in Mori-Nu aseptically packed firm tofu that would change the taste?

Kirsten, I am a vegetarian (not a vegan) also. I eat dairy products, but no flesh foods, strictly for health reasons. There is no flesh foods in yogurt. It is made from milk, so if you drink milk, go for the yogurt!! It is a great source of calcium!

oh, how it pains me that even a fellow vegetarian would proclaim that milk is a good source of calcium!!!! if you're a vegetarian for health reasons, you should know that the rates of breast cancer umongst milk drinking females is higher than in non milk drinking females, thanks to all the hormones they pump into the cows while torturing them. Please find out all the facts behind ANY animal product before you promote it.....

For those veggies who miss yoghurt, isn't soy yoghurt ok to eat for vegans and non-vegans alike?
Archived comment by: frieda
I sometimes get organic yougurt that does not have any rBGH in the milk. It is just milk, yogurt cultures and the fruit.

Frieda, Soy yogurt is fine for vegans, just make sure to check the ingredients for gelatine. You can also make your own soy yogurt, just follow the directions on the yogurt culture packet and subsitute
soy milk for cows milk.

Sounds yummy, I'll try for sure. I quit eating dairy products about 6 months ago. I have experienced some kind of withdrawls. I have pain in my hands , elbows, feet sometimes. could this be from lack of calcium. It concerns me. I do take calcium suppliments. I have chosen no to eat dairy products because of my mothers breast cancer hx. So as a prevention I am trying to change my diet. I have tried all of the soy yougurts. And I really don't care for them. I tried making my own and yuck, that was worse. Then I decided for awhile maybe I will only eat organic plain yogurt in my morning shakes, so I can get some calcium. Its all so confusing. I don't miss, milk, cheese, ice cream, or butter. These products I tryed to stay away from even when I was consuming dairy. Why do we love yogurt? Well thanks for a great recipe alternative Tamara

For an excellent source of calcium, try sesame seeds.

I drank lots of cows milk for 30 years. At age 35 I was diagnosed with osteoporosis. Now I understand that the calcium in cows milk isn't absorbed by the bones. I'm so greatful for soy products. Cant wait to try this yogurt. Thanks.

This is a lot like a yogurt recipe I developed. I found I missed the tartness of regular yogurt, so I added a little lemon juice, orange juice concentrate (with calcium--another excellent source for vegans!), or even vitamin C crystals to cut the sweetness a little. I've used soft non-silken tofu with good results, though its probably better with the silken kind. I love this yogurt with cereal, especially muesli!

Tofu can be an excellent source of calcium in its own right, depending on the coagulant used.

i have tried the soy yogurt from both silk and wholesoy. wholesoys versions are very chalky with a nasty aftertaste and dryness on the tongue (must be the calcium carbonate... silk uses tricalcium phosphate) funny thing, silk is smoother, and more delicious, and has 50% DV of calcium, whereas wholesoy has only 8%... needless to say, i reccommend silk. (oh, by the way, silks blueberry version is phenomenal) health to all.

There are sevral great vegan calcium sources you know! Many of them don't even cost much: Dried figs, sesame seeds,
tahini (which is like PB but more bitter and made w/sesame seeds), almonds, almond milk/butter,
parsley, broccoli, and green leafy veg. Of course, calcium-set tofu (check labels, most are) and soy/rice milks & yogurts & ice creams are just as great, but a bit more pricey. Tescos makes great tasting soya milk sweetened with apple juice concentrate for 69p a liter if you're in the UK.

I made this a few hours ago and I think it is a terrific way to keep soy in the diet. I have not tried store-bought soy yogurt after reading many bad reviews on it. But I found this recipe quite delicious. I did use
stevia in place of the sweeteners listed, and I only had blueberry extract. I will be ordering the raspberry soon. Again, very good.

There is calcium in regular milk ... the only problem is your body just doesn't know what to do with it ... I have only one question: why do you have to use fruit EXTRACTS when you have the real thing?!?!?!!?

If refrigerated, how long will this receipe stay fresh. I think this would be an excellent subsitute for yogurt.

people are saying they miss yogurt. just to tell you guys, there is a vegan yogurt. if you've seen silk is soy anywhere, they have a totally organic yogurt that is made with soymilk instead of regular milk. i read the label, and absolutely nothing on it that i can find is from animals. the strawberry-banana is really good!

I agree, Silk soy yogurts are fantastic. Personally I like Whole Soy as well... which is good since I haven't found plain Silk anywhere and I often use plain soy yogurt as a sub for sour cream and cream cheese. The only brand I absolutely hate is OSoy... talk about disgusting!

Hey yall, I just joined the site, today. I like Whole Soys and Silks yogurt. When I was eating meat and dairy products, I didn't ever ever ever like yogurt. Now, that I am vegan; I love these yogurt products. I eat a cup a day. I like the peach, vanilla, blueberry, raspberry, strawberry banana, lemon, etc. They tastes great. I'm going to try this recipe, too. I love being vegan now. I'm glad I have finally seen the light. LOL

this recipe sounds great but too bad it doesn't have the beneficial enzymes that normal and soy yogurts have. I'm not completely vegan but i have ruled out yogurt so I buy the soy ;-)
Archived comment by: bstutzma
Yogurt doesn't have enzymes but rather beneficial bacteria called l. acidophilus, l. bifidus, etc. You can easily add these healthful bacteria to this recipe by going to a dietary supplement retailer and buying non-dairy probiotic supplements and adding them in. Most have little to no taste.

Hi, I don't know about the States, but in Europe most soy yoghurt (such as alpro/provamel) is made with yoghurt cultures grown on cowmilk. It is still promoted as non-dairy and 100% plant-based, although milk is used to make it. Does anyone know a stricly vegan soy yoghurt?
Archived comment by: sdiathome
Sdlathome: Silks website says the following about the cultures from their tasty soy yogurt.... Hope you can get it in the UK. If you can Enjoy!!!! Are White Wave products vegan? All of our products and flavors are completely vegan except for the Baked Tofu Oriental style and the Seitan Vegetarian Stir Fry Strips which contain honey. There are no animal derivatives in any of the other products or ingredients. The lactic acid and yogurt cultures used in our Silk Cultured Soy come from a vegetable source. All vitamins used in Silk Soymilk are derived from vegetable sources including Calcium Carbonate which comes from limestone.

I love Silk soy yogurt! Black cherry, blueberry, key lime, raspberry, lemon and vanilla are my favorites. I like to add fruit or jam into my vanilla to make it like the good old fruit on the bottom yogurt I like so much. I like to swirl it in. Also there are so many other veg foods that are good sources of calcium - previously mentioned by another post-er. (I have recently become an absolute fan of fresh spinach - iron and calcium plus other good stuff).

Just made a batch...I used soft tofu rather than the firm (cuz that's what I had on hand) and omitted the water. I didn't have the fruit extracts so I just used vanilla. This is absolutely delicious. I can't wait to experiment with other frozen fruits fruits. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!!!!

Well, I'm sorry to say that I really didn't like this recipe. I miss yoghurt too. So, it was a bit disappointing...
Archived comment by: kubanowb
So a lot of the bacterial cultures that are used to make yogurt require the proteins that are present in milk to convert it into lactose, as that's the media that they grow in. If soy yogurts that advertise as vegan, how do they culture the live bacteria because its not naturally found in vegetable sources? I used to eat vegan-advertised yogurt but am now trying to wean from that too...
