Black Bean Burgers

What you need: 

1 (20 ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained
1/4 cup yellow onion, diced
1/4 cup red bell pepper, diced
1/2 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
1 egg replacer (http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=7678.0)
1 cup seasoned bread crumbs
2 tablespoons fresh chopped cilantro
2 tablespoons olive oil
salsa, to garnish
alfalfa sprouts, to garnish
guacamole, to garnish

What you do: 

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease baking pan. In a large bowl, mash black beans then add onion, bell pepper, cayenne pepper, egg replacer, vegan bread crumbs and cilantro.
2. Blend until all ingredients are mixed well. Form bean mixture into patties and place on prepared pan.
3. Bake for 10 minutes. Alternatively, fry them in olive oil. I recommend baking them. Serve with garnishes, if desired.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

Absolutely delish!!!

I made a few modifications, like parsley instead of cilantro, and I used dried onions rather than fresh ones and I didn't add the bell pepper and I added garlic salt.  But I really liked the chayenne pepper in this, that gave it a delicious zing.  I baked for 20 minutes as well and they came out perfect.  Load it with ketchup and it is good to go.  No bun, more like a patty for me.  Thanks for  this recipie, I have it five stars.

I've made this recipe a few times, and it is a favorite. In the past, I've added a few different veggies depending on what I had on hand. Corn is a good addition, I found. They are great with salsa and/or avocado on top!

Had these again for leftovers - EVEN BETTER!! The flavors really came out the next day. Would have thought that these would get softer sitting in the fridge, but they turned out still dry and perfect for heating on the skillet (no oil). The first time we cooked them in the oven and either way they are great! Jalepeno powder works really well, as does the oregano!

EXCELLENT! Creamy, yet not moist; brger held together firmly. Great combination of flavors.

Some modifications:Used 4 tsp dried onion flakes, a green bell pepper instead of red, 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper and 1/2 tsp ground jalepeno pepper, 1/4 cup flax seed with water instead of egg substitute, 1/4 cup cornmeal and 2 TB nutritional yeast instead of bread crumbs, 2 Tb dried oregano instead of fresh cilantro, and no oil. Added spicy mustard, creamy avocado, lettuce, and tomato slices in our burgers. Served with spicy sweet potato fries.

Jalapeno pepper, green bell pepper, and oregano add a great flavor! Also flaxseed, conrmeal, and nutritional yeast are a nice touch. Not too cornmealy, but just enough for texture. Glad we didn't use bread crumbs or at least the 1 cup called for - just 1/4 cup cornmeal was enough.

Simple an versatile - could try kidney beans, pinto beans, or white beans with various bell peppers and spices, and could ue these for burritoes or baked enchiladas filling. Love the heat - and could use more! (Hey, were from Texas, we like spice :))

These burgers are so awesome!  My kids loved them.  Warning:  they take some time to prepare.  Don't make them if you need something quick and easy.  The only thing I did different was add some garlic.  My hubby complained they they were too spicy, so if you like mild just use half the red pepper.

we needed to add some more oil than the recipe calls for, and bake it for longer (we gave into the beautiful aroma 25 minutes in), but these burgers are delicious!

They went well with thai hot sauce (cock sauce to those who know) and Dijon mustard.

These were great! i added some things like mushrooms, and didnt put peppers bt they were delisious. the only thing i had a problem with is they didnt seem to stick together well, that was probably my falt though.

My husband and I just thought these were okay. We used only 1/4 tsp of cayenne and we left out the cilantro, but the burgers were pretty bland and tasted mostly like breadcrumbs. Also, we're not vegan so we used an egg instead of egg substitute.

Because they've gotten such great reviews here, I wonder if we did something wrong? So here are our questions:

    Do you need to mash the black beans with a masher? We just used a fork so every single bean wasn't mashed all the way.
    Do you need to blend the ingredients in a blender? We used a handheld mixer.

These are really good. And they take no time at all to make. I leave the burgers in the oven for 20 minutes, flipping them at the 10 minute mark. They're great with salsa on top.

These have fantastic flavor.  Although, I did cook them twice as long in the oven, and they were still pretty soft.  I didn't think I made them that thick, but I decided to throw them in a pan to get them nice and crispy on the outside.  They were still fairly soft, but I guess that's what you should expect.  They're black bean burgers after all.  But they were so delicious.  My meat-eating boyfriend told me that I should definately make these again.  I also used garbanzo beans in them as well, because I only had half a can of black beans.  They could be eaten alone as bean fritters without the bun, and they'd be fantastic!  Thanks!
