Black Bean Burgers

What you need: 

3 (16 ounce) cans black beans, rinsed and drained
1 1/2 cups uncooked regular oats
1 medium onion, chopped
2 jalapeno peppers, seeded and chopped finely
2 cloves garlic, minced
3/4 cup fresh cilantro, roughly chopped
1/4 cup applesauce
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup flour
1/4 cup cornmeal
vegetable oil

What you do: 

1. Coarsely mash beans with a fork. Combine beans and next 7 ingredients (through salt). Shape into 8 patties.
2. Stir together flour and cornmeal and dredge patties in mixture.
3. Cook patties in hot oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat until each side is lightly browned. Drain on paper towels.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

I've made these a couple of times now and they're great!  So easy to make and super yummy - what more could I ask!

I don't add the applesauce though - in the UK I've only ever seen the sweetened type so didn't think that would work - the burgers were just fine without them.

I have fried them as per the recipe and also baked them in the oven - both ways were fine, so I'll probably bake them from now on. (brushed with oil and baked at about 200 C for about 15mins flipping halfway through)

Is there a substitute for the Oats? I am Celiac and have been searching for a great gluten free 'burger' for some time now and this sound like it could be the ticket.

There's a place called Local burger in Kansas (I think) that uses quinoa.  Perhaps that would work.  I think I'm going to try it.

Whoa!  These burgers are off the chain.  I'm so stoked that I found the recipie!!!  They would be so good topped with lettuce, tomato, and roasted red peppers.  Amazing job! :)

These are soooo good.  I polished off the whole batch by myself within a couple of days, then made more!  I subbed some pepper and hot sauce for the jalapeno peppers, a splash of soy sauce for the salt, left out the cilantro (blech!), and added 1/3 c of sunflower seeds.  Also didn't have any corn meal so I dipped them in just ww flour which worked great.

I tried the recipe with white kidney beans too and it wasn't quite as yummy.  Next time I'll have to try baking them as other people have suggested.

          Made these today . The best blackbean burger so far . Only change I made was add some minced green bell pepper.

Well I guess like so many others...  I followed this but didn't REALLY follow it, so I don't know if I should review it.  But it was the idea of the oats I found appealing and possibly novel, so I have to give this recipe a thumbs up.

I used one can of beans, 1/2 c of oats, 1 t. cumin, 2 cloves of garlic, and 1 T + 1 t blueberry applesauce...  I had already mashed the beans etc when I discovered the jar of applesauce I had in my fridge was moldy!  I made this into 4 patties and baked at 350 for 10 minutes, on a greased sheet in the toaster oven.  I thought they were quite yummy and will make them again, but I will use less garlic, and I will be sure of my applesauce situation before I commence. 

I have no doubts that this recipe would be awesome just as written.  I find the dredging in cornmeal part a little odd, though, but I guess it makes it easier when you pan-fry.

I have a fear of pan-frying.  I always burn things.

tried making these last night as a last minute dinner. i cut the recipe by 1/3 since i'm the only person who likes beans in my house. i also didn't have enough cash to buy fresh herbs, so i substituted two teaspoons of dried italian seasoning (oregano, basil, and something else). i also added some liquid smoke and nutritional yeast to the mix to give it a twist. i only cooked one patty from the batch at that time and had to increase the cooking time to a little over 20 minutes to get it dry enough to work with. overall, this was a super easy and great tasting recipe.

Very good!  I added a little more cilantro (just because I love it)  And I topped the burger off with lettuce and some tofutti better than sour cream mixed with a salsa and a little hot sauce.  Excellent!  I did cut this recipe down to 1/3.  I still had enough to make 4 burgers, perfect for 2 people.
