Brownies

What you need:

2 cups flour (I use enriched and whole wheat), divided
1 cup water
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup baking cocoa
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup chopped nuts, optional
1/2 cup vegan chocolate chips, optional

What you do:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F, and grease an 11x7" pan. Boil water and 1/2 cup of the flour over low heat, stirring constantly, until it reaches the consistency of a thin gluey paste. Remove from heat and let cool completely.
2. Mix vegan brown sugar, granulated sugar, salt, vanilla, cocoa and oil. Then add the flour and water mixture. Mix well.
3. Add the remaining 1 1/2 cups flour, baking powder, nuts, and chocolate chips.
4. Spread mixture into prepared pan. Bake for 25 minutes, or until a knife can be inserted and come out clean.
This was a really easy, and really tasty recipe. I gave some to my friends and they fell in love with them. They keep asking me to make more. I thought of maybe putting some chocolate frosting on them, but they were perfect without it. Enjoy.'

SO HOW'D IT GO?

I made these and they actually turned out! (I have a brownie curse). But, they were a tad too sweet for me; I'll reduce the sugar next time. I was thinking it needed more cocoa (it didn't taste rich enough in that sense), but 3/4c seems plenty... I think it's just the sugar.

I'm not sure of the function of the flour/water paste, but it seemed to lift my brownie curse, so I'm sticking with it.  ;D

Yummy!  I made these for my family and they were a tremendous hit!  I cut back on the sugar - used 1 c brown sugar and maybe 1/4 white, because I subbed applesauce for half the oil.  They are just perfect in texture!  I'll be making these again!

I made these for Thanksgiving and followed the recipe exactly, but they turned out not rich and not very chocolatey.  They were almost a little "gluey" tasting, if that makes sense.  I wonder if this was due to not allowing the flour-glue to cool.  Frosting them didn't even seem to help.  :(

These brownies were so good! but when i started to boil the flour, it got really clumpy...so I stopped and they still came out great!

I love this recipe!  I always make them with all ww pastry four, and either dark chocolate chunks or chopped almonds in the batter. The texture is perfect and it's really hard to mess this recipe up. I find them to be fudgey and not cakey which kicks butt.

I've made these so many times in the last month, that I sick ::)  These are sooooo good.  Took them to work and everybody loved them.  Texture more cake like, but that was ok.  I've even passed this recipe on to non vegans.

really the best vegan brownie recipe I've ever made (and I've tried a few).  These work at high altitude and at sea level.  Thank you!

I can't believe how amazing and wonderful these brownies were.  I made the recipe exactly as stated and they turned out better than I could have ever hoped.  The one thing I've missed after going vegan is the sweets.  This took care of all my chocolate cravings.  These were the best brownies I've EVER had - vegan or otherwise.

I have wanted to try this recipe for awhile. The boiling of the flour n water intrigued me.
I finally tried it with GREAT results. I used 2 9" round cake pans to bake them.
The brownies were rich, and sinfully delicous. Every single person who ate them loved the flavor and wanted the recipe.
My finicky 3 yr old cousin even enjoyed them with cold soy milk.
Thanks for the recipe!

This is the first time I've made vegan brownies (in all of 9 years!) that turned out like the old-fashioned kind. They were perfect. All my non-veg friends loved them.
