Brownies

What you need:

2 cups flour (I use enriched and whole wheat), divided
1 cup water
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup baking cocoa
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup chopped nuts, optional
1/2 cup vegan chocolate chips, optional

What you do:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F, and grease an 11x7" pan. Boil water and 1/2 cup of the flour over low heat, stirring constantly, until it reaches the consistency of a thin gluey paste. Remove from heat and let cool completely.
2. Mix vegan brown sugar, granulated sugar, salt, vanilla, cocoa and oil. Then add the flour and water mixture. Mix well.
3. Add the remaining 1 1/2 cups flour, baking powder, nuts, and chocolate chips.
4. Spread mixture into prepared pan. Bake for 25 minutes, or until a knife can be inserted and come out clean.
This was a really easy, and really tasty recipe. I gave some to my friends and they fell in love with them. They keep asking me to make more. I thought of maybe putting some chocolate frosting on them, but they were perfect without it. Enjoy.'

SO HOW'D IT GO?

I've tried this recipe easily over six times, it has never worked out for me, I don't know what to do. I've gone by the recipe and made many changes, but it either needs to be cooked longer because it's a thick goo and I burn it, or it gets really hard on the sides and bottom and isn't edible at all. Unless someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong, I give up, I'm done throwing away every batch.  :'(

These were AWESOME!  I had to bake them for an extra 10-15 minutes because I used a smaller pan, and I used only 1/4 cup of oil + 1/4 cup applesauce.  They're so chewy and thick and rich.  I baked them for my boyfriend's 34th birthday and topped them off with coconut whipped cream (from here:  http://www.everydaydish.tv/index.php?page=recipe&recipe=157) and a sprinkle of cinnamon.  LOVED THEM!

;)b Made these without any trouble the other day. My omnivore clan even liked them. I think they are best served with a little peanut butter on top, or with some crunchy pecans, peanuts. and dairy-free chocolate chunks  in them.

I tried making these brownies twice and both times they turned out horrible. I'm not sure why since everyone else loved them so much. They were really goopy in the center and wouldnt cook no matter how long i kept them in (the first time 45 min, the second time an hour and a half). I followed the directions exactly but with no luck. They tasted really good, but were under cooked inside and burned on the outside. And cooking them so long the second time ruined my pan. Sigh.. oh well. :'(

These were SO good.  I made some other vegan brownies and they tasted, well, vegan.  These just taste like chocolately goodness.  I think that little flour-in-boiling-water thing really did the trick!

I gotta say, this recipe is terrible. Ive made it up 6-7 times, thinking I was doing something wrong, but only 2 times was it even eatable, and barely at that. No matter how you adjust for baking chocolate, they come out frying in their own oil. They often come out under cooked (they need *way* longer than 25 min to bake). And they come out fine on the outside but a mess inside.

Ive baked these at 3 different places and a friend made them up too with the same results.
Over all a HUGE disappointment.

You were warned.

I don't know what when wrong for you... Maybe it's a problem with your oven, or maybe you have problems with the flour and water part... Like the author wrote, it's important to have something like a thin gluey paste. If not, it's too watery.
I encourage you to try this recipe again, because it's the best dessert ever :)
My friends keep asking me to bake those brownies for them!

They are better with chocolate chips and nuts, I think.

I've made these twice using ww pastry flour and 1/2 oil, 1/2 applesauce and vegan choc. chips. Both times they've come out great! I baked them 25 - 30 minutes, until a toothpick came out clean and they are perfect! I line my pans with parchment paper and I've never had problems with them (or anything else) sticking.

My boyfriend loves them! They are the perfect combination of cakey and gooey moistness! I love the corners because of the slightly crispy edge!!

Thanks for the recipe!!

I mada a batch yesterday and used an 8x8 pan.  It took quite a bit longer to bake.  It came out great!  Best brownies I ever had!

these brownies are so, so, so GOOD! it's like eating fudge. i've made them a few times and once or twice the bottom of the brownies were done, but the inside was a little too gooey. however, it's quite alright to me if they're gooey inside...i just know not everyone loves a "wet" brownie or cookie.
either way, i love this recipe!!!  :)
