Brownies

What you need:

2 cups flour (I use enriched and whole wheat), divided
1 cup water
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup baking cocoa
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup chopped nuts, optional
1/2 cup vegan chocolate chips, optional

What you do:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F, and grease an 11x7" pan. Boil water and 1/2 cup of the flour over low heat, stirring constantly, until it reaches the consistency of a thin gluey paste. Remove from heat and let cool completely.
2. Mix vegan brown sugar, granulated sugar, salt, vanilla, cocoa and oil. Then add the flour and water mixture. Mix well.
3. Add the remaining 1 1/2 cups flour, baking powder, nuts, and chocolate chips.
4. Spread mixture into prepared pan. Bake for 25 minutes, or until a knife can be inserted and come out clean.
This was a really easy, and really tasty recipe. I gave some to my friends and they fell in love with them. They keep asking me to make more. I thought of maybe putting some chocolate frosting on them, but they were perfect without it. Enjoy.'

SO HOW'D IT GO?

A bit cake like, but very good. I am making them for a second time tonight for guests.

Despite all of the positive reviews, I had my doubts about this recipe mainly because I've eaten vegan brownies before made by others and they tasted horrible. BUT I was so pleased with the end results, freaking fantastic!

I used a 9" round pan and they took longer than 25 minutes.. not entirely sure how much longer. I used unbleached all-purpose flour and added chocolate chunks in the mixture as well as sprinkled on top. Perfection.

;)b I halved the recipe and spread them into a 9x9 pan. I like the idea of using whole wheat flour, and they came out great! Next time I might add more vanilla. Also, I like thicker brownies and these came out pretty thin this time, so next time I'll make the full recipe and use the same pan and see how they come out. Thanks for the recipe!

My favorite treat has always been brownies.. so I've ate a lot and tried a lot of different recipes.. I have to say that these are the best brownies I've ever had (vegan or not).
If you follow this recipe exactly, they will turn out amazing~

I made half a recipe and they were good; then I made a whole recipe and substituted gluten free flour (rice flour, millet, tapioca flour, xanthum gum, cornstarch) for the regular flour.  I had trouble in the boil water/flour part - it got all chunky.  But I mixed it in anyway, then ran the whole thing (prior to adding the other flour) through the Cuisinart and it was fine.  The taste is fabulous and they are more chewy than the first batch - I recommend you try it whether or not you have wheat allergies (I don't but my mom does).  I also used pecans and carob chips both times - wouldn't do without if you can.  If there's such a thing as healthy brownies, these have to be it!

uh like yummy, these were so good, I hope I don't make them a lot because wouldn't that counter the positive effect of veganism? :D

Apparently this recipe does NOT like baker's chocolate (bar form) because I made it 3 times, once with powdered cocoa and it was fine, then two times with baker's chocolate and I got an oily fried gross mess.

Ive never had a recipe fail to the point of un-eatability.

Kinda cheesed about it  >:(

Made these tonight and they came out awesome!  I had to bake them a couple of minutes longer because they were a little too gooey in the middle.  These are my first brownies since going vegan a year ago.  I think they were a great veganniversary present to myself!
