Decorative Frosting

What you need:

4 tablespoons vegan shortening (I used Earth Balance)
1 tablespoon vegan butter (again, I used Earth Balance)
1 teaspoon Vanilla
3/4 cup to 1 cup vegan powdered sugar (approx. - more or less as needed)
optional: food coloring

What you do:

This recipe is great for decorative frosting, such as lettering or piping!
In a bowl or measuring cup, combine the shortening and butter. Mix well with a spoon or fork.
Add the vanilla, and mix well.
Slowly add the powdered sugar until it reaches the consistency you need. It may take a minute to fully mix in, just keep stirring! =)
(Note: I found it helpful while stirring to kind of smoosh the mixture against the wall of the measuring cup (or bowl), and then mix it all together; repeat as needed.)
Add the food coloring, if desired.
If you don't have a cake decorating bag, you can just put it all in a small Ziploc plastic baggie, cut a *tiny* bit of the corner off and use that.

If you use this to write on cookies, will it set hard like royal icing? Thanks for the recipe!

I don't think so - every time I've used it, it stays somewhat mushy still :)  I'm sure there's probably something you can do to make it harden, but I'm not sure what.

I've used this recipe a few times now and it's awesome!  It works for piping, writing, dyeing, and everything else you could possibly want to do with frosting.  And it makes a lot more than you'd think... it doesn't look like a lot when you first whip up the recipe, but a little goes a long way.

Yuuummm.
Ok, I didn't really measure.
I used the reccomended amount of butter and shortening. Buuut, I used about 3/4th of a bag of p-sugar.
and some vanilla pudding mix and some almond extract.
I might have made it too sweet, but oh wellll.

This was wonderful!  I had a lot left over, so I gave it to my friends (meat/dairy/egg consumers) and they actually licked the bowl clean!  It was delicious and very easy to decorate with.  Might have been a tad thick for my taste, but still, AMAZING.

The hint about mashing the ingredients on the side of the bowl helped a lot, too.  Thanks!
