Delicious and Simple Garlic Lovers' Red Sauce!

What you need:

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 small onion, diced
3-4 large cloves garlic, minced
10-12 ounces tomato sauce
1/8 cup water + 1/2 tablespoon cornstarch, optional
basil, to taste (I use a lot)
1-2 tablespoons brown sugar

What you do:

1. Heat the oil in a medium sauce pan. Add the onion, cook until just transparent, then add garlic. Stir frequently, until the garlic starts to turn a golden color, then add tomato sauce.
2. Boil, then turn temperature to low, cover, and allow to simmer. I like my sauce to be thin. If you like it thick, add water + cornstarch, and stir until it is all dissolved. Stir into sauce.
3. Add basil, however much you like. Then stir in brown sugar last.Between the onion, garlic, and tomato, this sauce tastes rather salty. The sugar balances out the flavors, and brings about a nice, deep reddish color.
You can serve immediately, or, if you have time, cover and allow to simmer for however long you'd like! This really gets all the delicious favors out.

I just made this and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised! It was so quick and easy and very tasty! I'm thinking of making some breadsticks just to eat it all up  :)
I didn't have any basil on hand but I subbed dried oregano and it came out perfect. Thanks for such an awesome recipe!

This was way too sweet for me and I only used one tablespoon brown sugar.  It may have been the tomatoes I was using.  Out of the can they don't taste sweet, but I did notice on the ingredient list that "high fructose corn syrup" is in it.  Is that stuff in everything????

Anyway, I salvaged it by adding another can of tomatos, and a couple of tablespoons of red wine vineger.  It is still sweet, but it isn't too bad now.  Next time, I think I may add a LOT less sugar, like none to only 1/2 tsp, and the red wine vineger is good in it.  I like my tomato sauce tangy, not sweet, that is my personal preference.

Thanks for the recipe though, with my tweeks, I think this may be a winner, I have been wanting to make my own sauce rather then buy from the store.

This summer this should be very good when my tomatos in the back yard ripen, yummmm.  Then I think I will need the sugar!

This one's definitely worth making. Loved it.

I tried this last night and it was pretty good. I added a green pepper, as well as 1/2 a package of Yves ground round. Next time I'll add less ground round, so as not to take away from the sauce.

Loved this recipe.  Very easy to make and tasty, too.  But next time I will omit the sugar.  I pan-fried some crumbled tofu before adding the diced onion.  I also added pepper.  Thanks!
