Delicious Pakistani Dhal
3 cups water or vegetable stock
1 cup dry red lentils
4 to 5 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 medium onion, diced
1/2 medium-sized ginger root, peeled and chopped
2 to 3 cloves garlic, diced or crushed
2 teaspoons curry powder
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon red chili powder
salt and pepper, to taste
1/2 (14 ounce) can chopped tomatoes
1. Heat water or stock in pot until boiling. Add lentils and boil for one minute. Reduce heat to a simmer. Simmer lentils until they resemble a thick paste.
2. While lentils are simmering, heat oil in frying pan. Add onion, ginger, and garlic; fry until soft. Add curry, coriander, cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper; saute for 2 to 3 minutes.
3. Add tomatoes; saute for another 3 to 5 minutes. Add fried spice mixture into lentil paste, stir and cook an additional 15 to 20 minutes.
Serve as is or over basmati rice.
SO HOW'D IT GO?
this was awesome...i added a little bit of coconut milk which just added a creamy feel to it
YUM! This recipe turned me on to Indian style cooking. It is a standby for a fast dinner and its great served on top of couscous.
This was the first recipe I've tried on this website after surveying for months on end and what I have to say is that it was utterly delicious! The only substitution I made was subbing a tomato since I had no onion and paired it with curried bhindi. <3
I will definitely make it a lot since it was soo simple and easy!
totally amazing. So simple, so cheap, and so good. My boyfriend loved it too. thanks for this great recipe! ::)
Very yummy and so easy!
Just made this, used extra garlic, onions, and ginger, smells wonderful. Making some brown rice and fresh steamed kale on the side. Sneaked a taste, too die for. ;D Thanks for sharing. Oh yeah, used canned diced tomatoes with garlic and oilve oil. ;)
the brownish colour wasn't very appealing..i thought it would be more orange?
but i was hungry and it was definitely filling.
This stuff is amazing! I love the fresh ginger and garlic. I probably put in double the amount suggested. :P
I also omitted the red chili powder- too spicy for the little ones!
Very good recipe. I only used about 1/2 the curry. Also, I didn't have canned tomatoes so I used 1/2 can leftover tomato sauce and one chopped fresh-from-the-garden tomato. My 2 and 4 year olds also liked it!
