Dippin Sticks

What you need: 

1 container extra firm tofu
1/4 cup corn meal
2-3 tablespoon nutritional yeast
1 teaspoon salt (optional)
soy sauce (optional)

What you do: 

After draining and lightly pressing tofu to get rid of excess moisture, slice tofu into French fry shape. They should be about 1/2 wide and 2 long. If they are too big they won't stay together when they are dipped.
On a plate or in a shallow bowl mix together corn meal and yeast (salt is optional) and either dip tofu sticks in soy sauce then roll in the corn meal mixture or go straight to the corn meal and skip the soy sauce. I use soy sauce only occasionally and some times use teriyaki sauce in place of it and that usually makes them just a little more crispy.
Place them on a baking sheet that has been sprayed with a little oil and bake at 350 for 15 minutes, turn over and bake for 15 minutes. These can be pan fried but I like being able to put them all in the oven and walk away, and its more healthy baking them.
Let cool and serve with any dipping sauce like marinara, mustard, ketchup, soy-ranch, or anything you've got laying around. My kids love them and I love giving them to them, they are so cheap and easy to make.

Pretty good!  I had no cornmeal so instead I just crushed up some taco shells along with the nutritional yeast.  It seemed to work just as well!

Next time I think I'll pan fry these just a little, before throwing them in the oven. Not as healthy I know, but I think it would give it a bit more crunch!

All in all this is a fun & easy recipe, a perfect finger-food for kids and definitely something I'll be experimenting with again.

i think these would have turned out better if the tofu had been frozen and thawed first.  i used a little cayenne pepper in my breading, but wish i had thought to add both garlic and onion powder.  will definately make this again using those changes.


im not a big tofu fan so that might be why but...

i thought it had a slightly of taste, it might be the soy sauce??

i liked the crunchy exterior it developed but i wasnt tooo excited about tasting the mealines of corn meal on the tofu.

but it did taste a bit like chicken nuggets!!


i had a flashback to my dads fresh fried bluegill when i ate these!  (even though i baked them)  i nixed the soy sauce but added a few shakes of onion and garlic powders.  also, i used tofu that had been frozen and then thawed.  dipped em into a mix of veganaise and lemon juice and they were delish!


I just finished eating these. I really wish I took a picture of them.
they were super tasty and crunchy. I did use some garlic and onion powder with  a dash of seasoning salt.
My boy and I decided to use dill sauce to dip.

We tried this the other night and thought they were pretty good! I added a 1/2 Tbsp. of flour, some pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder to the breading, and did dip them in soy sauce. I made sure to press the breading on each side many times (pressing down on the top of the tofu stick).

I liked them a bit better when they cooled, and think I will use marinara sauce next time as my dip I used ketchup). I may also try baking the sticks a little bit first or may use frozen/thawed tofu.
