EEE-ZEE-CHEE-ZEE Grilled Cheeze

What you need:

1/8 nutritional yeast
1/8 whole wheat pastry flour
water
sea salt
bread
vegan margarine (I use Earth Balance, its vegan)
black pepper (optional)
tomato (optional)

What you do:

Put equal amounts of nutritional yeast and pastry flour in a small sauce pan (I like a little more yeast than flour). Add enough water to mix them together. Heat on medium for just a few seconds to heat it up (you only need about 1/8 cup of each for one serving. This can be adjusted to the number of sandwiches you are making). It should become like a spread (peanut butter consistency). Add sea salt to taste.
Spread this on bread and add tomato if desired. Add pepper to taste. Butter the outside of your bread (I use Earth Balance, its vegan), and grill it in a pan like you would grilled vegan cheese.
I just discovered this the other day.....I had been missing the real thing after all of these years and this is even better! The cheeze spread is good on crackers too (the only bad thing is that it kind of reminds me of Cheeze-Whiz). But delicious anyway!

SO HOW'D IT GO?

Has anyone got a measurement that they use for the water? I'm terrible at guessing what it's supposed to be.  I made this once and it was awful (and entirely my fault, apparently according to all the other rave reviews).  I think I didn't use enough water, or microwaved it too long or ???

I put very little water...just enough so that the NY and flour can mix. Once you heat it up it turns into a thick, peanut butter type consistency. Some will indeed stick to the pan.

I have never microwaved this...I use a small sauce pan on the stove. Maybe that's what went wrong.

This was surprisingly good.  Maybe not "Cheesy" but salty enough to make us happy.  My family thinks the NY has a funny smell and usually won't eat it but they tried this.  It thickens up quickly once cooked-anyway to keep it thinned to use a sauce for veggies/rice/etc.?  Thanks for giving us another "Kid friendly" (or in my case, husband friendly) option!

This cheese spread for sandwiches is AWESOME!  I was skeptical, despite all the rave reviews... it just looked too easy to be true.  I used it on double-decker sandwiches that I toasted instead of grilled, with tofurky, grilled onions, bacon bits and avocado/tomato spread.  SoOoOo good!  Thanks! =)

Mine didn't really turn out so good...the mixture was really thick and didn't melt well (maybe I needed to add more water?) and it pretty much just tasted like nutritional yeast. But in a grilled sandwich with tomato, shallots, avocado and mustard it was still delicious :D

All but one of the many recipes I've tried in the last week have been awesome. This is one of the goodies. :hotforyou: Drooooooolz.

I used arrowroot as thickener. (Dunno if that's healthier than cornstarch? No matter.) It made it nice and smooooooth and cheezy-gooey. Words I do not use lightly. ;D

I was not brought up on grilled cheese sandwiches made with cheese-like substance from a jar... I dunno what those would have tasted like, but I know this tastes damn good. :>

I was terribly unimpressed by the flavor of this sandwich.  It should have sent up a red flag when one reviewer praised the filling by saying that it tasted like it came straight out of a jar.  In my pre-vegan days, the stuff in a jar didn't taste like real cheese either.

Well, the recipe author does say that it tastes like Cheese Whiz, so you should be delighted that the recipe tastes as promised!  ;D

Definitely one to try...I cooked up some hot sauced chik'n strips and added them to my sandwich, I thought it was tasty! I'd been wanting to make it for awhile and tonight was too tired to make anything else.  It's not gourmet and don't expect it to taste like real cheese, but it was fun to eat and I enjoyed it!

wow! this makes a truely wonderful (and decadent) grilled cheese!  :-* i will never go back to processed vegan cheese again.

i added sea salt and mrs. dash garlic & herb to the ny/ww flour mix. i think this is what made it so delicious. then i spread it on ezekiel bread, topped with a few slices of home grown tomato, vidalia onion, dill pickles. then earth balanced both sides of the bread, grilled a few minutes and voila. an amazing sandwich! it is the perfect comfort food. i think i will have to make one again tomorrow!
